Even before the premiere of Monster season three, Netflix is already busy preparing for a fourth season of this popular true-crime franchise from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan.

Sources confirm that the fourth season will focus on Lizzie Borden, who was tried (and acquitted) in 1892 for the axe murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts. Casting for the lead role is currently underway. Insiders say production is targeting a fall start, though Netflix declined to comment officially.

The murders and trial of Lizzie Borden received widespread attention in the American media at the time and have since become part of American popular culture. Lizzie Borden has been adapted into films and movies several times, including the Lifetime television series The Lizzie Borden Chronicles starring Christina Ricci and the 2018 film Lizzie, starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart.

This aligns with the approach taken in the second season of Monster, titled "Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story." While this story had been told before, Murphy and Brennan's version attracted considerable public attention and even sparked renewed debate about the conviction of the Menendez brothers.

The franchise began with "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," which remains one of the top five English-language series on Netflix. During the premiere of the second season about the Menendez brothers, Murphy announced the third season, "The Original Monster," in which Charlie Hunnam plays the notorious serial killer Ed Gein.
