The four-part series Sean Combs: The Reckoning is released today on Netflix. In the teaser, Combs, visibly tense, is seen telling his lawyer that they are losing.
The former music star nervously checks his phone in a New York hotel room, six days before the trial that will eventually lead to his imprisonment. He emphasizes that they need to find someone “who has worked in the dirtiest of the dirty,” immediately setting the tone for the story that follows.
Under the guidance of executive producer Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson and director Alex Stapleton, the documentary delves deep into the life of Combs, known as Diddy or Puff Daddy. Combs is currently serving a four-year sentence in the minimum-security facility FCI Fort Dix in New Jersey, after being convicted on two counts of organizing prostitution transport.
The documentary portrays him as a media giant, music icon, and convict, following his rapid rise in the music industry through Bad Boy Entertainment. His talent for spotting stars helped launch artists like The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Jodeci, and Danity Kane, making him one of the defining figures in bringing hip-hop to the mainstream.
Simultaneously, the project shows how, according to former employees, friends, and artists, a dark undercurrent in his ambitions gradually emerged. Through never-before-seen footage and exclusive interviews with people from his inner circle, the documentary paints the story of a powerful, enterprising man, the dazzling empire he built, and the shadowy side that always lurked beneath.
