The lead role in Trigger Point goes to Joel Edgerton (Dark Matter (2024)), who has recently garnered much praise for his film work. The series is an action-driven crime drama from writer and creator Harrison Query, director Jeremy Saulnier, production company A24, and producer Joe Hipps.
Trigger Point started as a spec script by Query and quickly attracted significant attention in the industry. In May, A24 acquired the project after a bidding war among seven parties, with Hipps set to produce it under his deal with A24 and Saulnier attached as director.
Before the project was even pitched to networks and streamers, Edgerton was already linked to the lead role. With two completed scripts, this led to another fierce battle among several interested parties. Ultimately, Netflix and Apple TV remained with both offering direct series orders, with Netflix emerging as the winner.
The story follows a group of former Tier One Special Forces operators who use their highly specialized military skills for the criminal underworld under the guise of a private military security firm. Meanwhile, an FBI agent is hunting them down. Edgerton plays Red, a former elite soldier turned criminal who plays a central role within this dangerous organization.
The arrival of Trigger Point fits into a notably active television market, where multiple large bidding wars have led to direct series orders. In recent months, Netflix has secured several such projects, including Pagans, Black Hole, and Rabbit, Rabbit. For A24, this marks the second direct-to-series deal in a short period, following the legal thriller Discretion, which landed at Paramount+.
For Joel Edgerton, the series comes at a time when his career is once again in the spotlight. He is receiving much attention for his leading role in Train Dreams, for which he will soon receive a Disruptors Award, and he will soon be seen in the film The Plague, which premiered in Cannes.
On television, he recently completed filming the second season of Dark Matter (2024) for Apple TV, which will be released in 2026. Previously, Edgerton had television roles in The Underground Railroad on Prime Video and Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+.
