The Australian high school series Heartbreak High follows the students of Hartley High as they prepare for graduation and transition into adulthood. When a revenge act goes wrong, main character Amerie, played by Ayesha Madon, and her friends are forced to hide their secret to avoid serious consequences.
The series is a reboot of the eponymous teen series from the nineties, which itself stemmed from the film The Heartbreak Kid. The release date was announced during a Netflix event for Australia and New Zealand, where first footage of new Australian productions such as My Brilliant Career, written by Liz Doran, Allen by producer Daley Pearson and his company Ludo Studio, and Breakers featuring Antony Starr in a leading role were also shown.
According to Amanda Duthie, Netflix aims to focus more on local Australian stories and talent this year, while Minyoung Kim emphasized that successes like Boy Swallows Universe and Heartbreak High show that Australian productions are increasingly having a global impact and contributing to a new generation of creators.
The third and final season of Heartbreak High will premiere worldwide on March 25 on Netflix.
