Grey’s Anatomy – Season 10

Ever since the start of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ I’ve been a huge fan. Although I’ve loved all the stories so far, the quality of the series hasn’t always been at the same level. A plane crash, a shooter in the hospital, we saw it all in the past nine years. Sometimes I wonder if series like this need to continue for so long. Can any good come from a tenth season of this success formulae, or should they have stopped when the series was at its most successful?

This season is another emotional one for the doctors of the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. But the extreme catastrophes that they faced in previous seasons are behind them. It’s more about relationships, feelings and the character development of the doctors whom it all started with. At the beginning of the season, it was already announced that this would be Dr. Christina Yang’s (Sandra Oh) last. She and Meredith Grey have been the show runners from the start, so her departure shocked a lot of people. I don’t want to give away too much, but what I can say is that her goodbye was a very nice and heartfelt one. The intelligent, stubborn and cold but also very sympathetic doctor that stole our hearts throughout these years got the ending she deserves. Newcomers Dr. Leah Murphy (Tessa Ferrer) and Dr. Shane Ross (Gaius Charles) also made their departures with some great storylines, mostly at the beginning of season ten and a nice goodbye in the end.

When the season started I had my doubts. Although I was pretty sure I would be watching it, I wasn’t sure on how frequently I would be looking up episodes. But ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ kept me wanting more again with great storylines and a cliffhanger before the winter hiatus that left us all in shock. The series went back to its origin in my opinion, with drama on the work floor and troubled love lives that is all so familiar for the doctors in this hospital. The special guests were also great again. We got to see Keke Palmer (‘True Jackson, VP’) as one of the patients and Paul James (‘Greek’) as a new employee in one episode. Derek Shepherd’s (Patrick Dempsey) sister Amelia (Caterina Scorsone, ‘Private Practice’) also reappeared with a possible attending position in her future.

The most shocking events for me were April Kepner’s (Sarah Drew, ‘Everwood’) wedding, and everything that happened around this. The way Dr. Preston Burke (Isaiah Washington) was reintroduced as a guest in one of the final episodes. And the confession Christina’s replacement, Dr. Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary, ‘Emily Owens M.D.’) did at the end of the season finale. But that’s not all, cause we also get to enjoy many relationship problems between Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and Dr. Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) and Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) and Dr. Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capsaw). This and many other fun, beautiful and dramatic stuff happened during the exciting tenth season.

Christina’s leaving was something I found a bit heartbreaking in the end. But even though I have my doubts about what this will do to the next season, I think it was proved again how inventive the writers of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ really are. There’s no denying that the show isn’t the same series as it was back when it started in 2005. But the writers and cast did it again, they made a great season that was another success. I can honestly say that season ten of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is one of the best, compared to the seasons that were aired in the past few years. People who love the show will fall in love with it again, and there is plenty of drama left for another season or two. There might be some crazy patients and unbelievable accidents but that didn’t make me enjoy any of it any less. I really look forward to the next season and am curious to see how the show will do without one of its top stars present.
