Grimm - Complete series

Fantasy has always been a genre that appeals to people, in both literature and on the small and big screen. Every now and then, channels manage to bring a new and interesting fantasy series. The major problem is that these type of shows usually don't come cheap as they have to be shot at specific locations or require expensive sets to be constructed. Game of Thrones or Westworld are great examples. Next to that, special outfits have to be made and make-up is often ridiculously expensive for certain characters. And don't forget all the stunt work that is required in order to produce such a show.

At first glance this show doesn't appear to be anything special, but the way it is brought is absolutely amazing.

It is essential that networks are convinced about the chance of success of a show such as this one. In the particular case of Grimm, the network has probably never regretted giving the go-ahead to this show, which you can describe as a weekly cop show, dipped into a large bowl of fantasy soup.

The story mainly revolves around detective Nick Burckhardt, who figures out that he's a Grimm. That means he's a kind of guardian of humanity, who protects it against Wesen. These are beings who are half man, half animal and if you go through the Wesen history books you'll realise that there are lots of different types. Some of these are friendly, others aren't. Most of the Wesen are terrified of the Grimm, but nonetheless there are a few who want to see the Grimm dead.

The six seasons of this show were quite similar to that of a cop show, but the murders were committed by various kinds of Wesen. Slowly but steadily, a power struggle erupts among Wesen. Nick is gradually but surely being drawn into that battle, which is spread out over five seasons in various forms. At first, Nick is the only one who is aware of the existence of Wesen. Eventually more and more people in his close environment become aware of this as well. Some of them are even influenced by Wesen or even become part of their world.

At first it doesn't appear to be that great a story, but how it is told is amazing. The writers have successfully kept this show going for six years whilst at the same time keeping it exciting and interesting by introducing new storylines. They were also given the chance to properly conclude the show and the writers used the final season for just that.

Grimm will become part of the history books as one of the better 21st century fantasy-horror shows thanks to it's properly thought-out storyline, but also due to the actors who were able to portray their characters perfectly.
