Haantjes - Season 1

Haantjes is a wonderfully humorous series about four men who investigate what modern masculinity actually entails.
Haantjes is a delightfully humorous series about four men who investigate what modern masculinity actually entails. Where women are fully in their feminist era and fight for their place and certainly take it, the men talk about toxic masculinity. How far can you go as the rooster in the world without being seen as a toxic man?

In Haantjes we follow four men: Mike (Jeroen Spitzenberger), Danny (Waldemar Torenstra), Greg (André Dongelmans) and Ivo (Benja Bruijning). They all have different views on life and their own problems. Together they go in search of the solution with the course 'New Masculinity'.

Mike thinks he's going to get a promotion at work, but instead his boss replaces him with a woman because there should be more femininity at the helm. In his home life his masculinity also takes a hit when his girlfriend Stevie (Eva Laurenssen) threatens to become the breadwinner with her social media career.

Danny wants to settle down with his girlfriend after years of fooling around without a serious relationship. His girlfriend thinks differently and wants an open relationship to avoid the rut. Greg has literally lost his masculinity, after weeks of not showing any interest in his wife he goes to the doctor and finds out that he has a testosterone deficiency. What he doesn't realize is that he is too late with the solution. And finally we have Ivo; not tied to anything, but still reluctant to find a new love.

Haantjes is a very entertaining series that does not cross the line. There is a lot of talk about feminism and toxic masculinity, but it does not go overboard. It provides an entertaining series that highlights different perspectives, but remains tame, with the exception of a few outliers that make the story so wonderfully uncomfortable.

However, this series lacks real strong elements. It feels too familiar, a repetition of what has already proven to be a success. They certainly do not miss the mark, but a real good hit is certainly not in it either. However, the series is quite short, which means it is not an extensive investment. With only six episodes, this is a nice series to watch in between.

Those who find the series entertaining and would like to see more can be happy, because season 2 is already in the making. The release date is unfortunately still unknown, but that season will also be available on Netflix.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
