The Devil's Couple reveals how Jean-Claude Lacote and Hilde Van Acker left a trail of victims across Europe. Their crimes reached a climax with the murder of British businessman Marcus Mitchell, whose body was found with two bullets in the head in a forest in De Haan on May 23, 1996.
Although the couple quickly found themselves in the crosshairs of the law and were sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment, they managed to evade justice for more than 25 years. With money from their victims, they led an extravagant lifestyle filled with sports cars, private jets, and luxury apartments. Thanks to their connections to influential circles, they managed to evade prosecution for a long time.
They were only arrested in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, in 2019, after an international manhunt and a campaign by Belgium's Most Wanted. They appeared in court again in 2021, where, despite a lack of hard evidence, they were convicted by a jury.
The documentary offers a unique insight into the case, with interviews with investigators, victims, former colleagues, and a former lover of Lacote. Moreover, the filmmakers were granted exclusive access to never-before-seen archive footage and were the only ones permitted to film the entire trial.
The Devil's Couple will be available exclusively on Streamz starting Tuesday, August 5th. Watch the teaser below.
