His & Hers is a psychological thriller based on Alice Feeney's book. With stars like Tessa Thompson, Jon Bernthal, and Pablo Schreiber, it features plenty of familiar faces. Does this ensure viewing enjoyment? Anna, played by Tessa Thompson, was a successful journalist who, after being out of the game for a while, discovers that she's lost the position she worked so hard for. When a murder occurs in the village where she grew up, she seizes the opportunity to get back 'in the picture.' Armed with cameraman Richard (Pablo Schreiber), she returns to her hometown.
It turns out Anna knows the victim and also shares a past with the detective handling the murder case - Jack, played by Jon Bernthal. It's immediately clear that not everything is smooth sailing between Anna and Jack, although we have to wait a bit to find out exactly what's going on between the two.
Throughout the series' six episodes, mostly through flashbacks, we gradually learn more about the history between the various characters involved. With each revelation, we uncover a piece of the mystery, understanding why most of them are on tense terms with each other, why the murder happened, and who did it.
There's no shortage of suspense, and the atmosphere they've created is spot-on. It kept me curious about the next episode each time, and I ended up watching the series in no time at all.
For a series with 'only' six episodes, there are quite a few plot twists. These are not always entirely believable. The series tends to steer you toward an obvious suspect, and just when you think you have it figured out, another twist comes along, throwing you off track once more.
Despite all this, I watched the series with great pleasure. There's no shortage of tension, and the created atmosphere is spot on. It kept me curious about the next episode, and I ended up watching the series in no time.
I found Emma Thompson's performance very strong, as well as Jon Bernthal's, although he's not always at his best in his vulnerable scenes. The chemistry between the two, in particular, was very strong. From the beginning, you can feel the restrained tension and frustrations they have towards each other. While not every twist is entirely believable, it's a minor flaw I'm willing to overlook.
