Homeland - Season 1
Carrie Mathinson (Claire Danes) doubts the integrity of US marine Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis). She thinks that he has been turned by Iraq authorities. Brody, who’s being rescued after eight years of imprisonment, looks like a Saddam Hussein being found in a hole in the ground. He has been isolated from his family and his US roots. Literally. Both Carrie and Brody carry their own burden and that’s what makes these series very profound. Homeland is about the retrieval of an American soldier by the CIA. Is he still the same person or has he defected to the enemy?
As a viewer this question keeps you engaged for twelve episodes. As the story develops you get more information, but the doubt about Brody remains. It´s very understandable, the man had to adapt his personality for many years, living in Iraq. He has seen horrifying things, and has been taken care of by locals, with whom he connected as far as he understood. They influenced him. At the same time, he also remained a typical US Marine, drilled to the core. Just like Carrie, by the way. Amidst the numerous grey suits in the CIA organization, she portrays a young woman of flesh and blood, suffering from Borderline. Which no one knows of course, except from her boss, Saul Berenson.
Carrie has been suspended after her last mission to Iraq, for an illegal operation. It was during that mission she learned the rumor about an American soldier, who was turned. After her suspension, Carrie is reinstated at the department of counter terrorism and hears about Brody. It is her job to work closely with him in order to find out whether Brody can be trusted or not. She does her job incredibly well. So does Brody... He is reunited with his family after eight years. His wife is estranged from him. Not that odd, because Brody is acting weird, to say the least. It´s obvious he suffers from a war trauma.
But there´s more to it. You keep asking yourself whether Brody´s behavior is genuine. Or that he´s covering up a terrorist operation. A quite relevant subject in the USA for the past decade. It still is. The US government brings back a war hero. He even has a shot at becoming a senator. Or are the Iraqis putting him in this position?
Homeland is a quality production, with many exciting moments. Family life, including the familiar everyday problems, is being exchanged with serious state issues. Can Carrie unmask the war hero? Is there something to unmask? Or is this the typical paranoia of a highly sensitive Republican Government?
