HBO renews House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

HBO will continue expanding the Game of Thrones universe in the coming years. The network has ordered new seasons for both House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
Both series have been renewed for new seasons even before their planned releases in 2026. House of the Dragon will receive a fourth season, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms—based on George R. R. Martin's Dunk and Egg novellas—returns with a second season.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight

In 2026, both series will be available on HBO: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on Sunday, January 18, followed by House of the Dragon season three in the summer. Season two of Knight will then follow in 2027, while season four of House of the Dragon is scheduled for 2028.

Francesca Orsi, Executive VP of HBO Programming, says she is thrilled to bring new content from the Game of Thrones universe over the next three years. According to her, both series show how "vast and rich" Martin's world still is. She emphasizes that the adventures of Dunk and Egg form an inspiring underdog story, while House of the Dragon will feature some of the most epic battles yet next summer.

House of the Dragon is created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin, with Condal as showrunner. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was co-created by Martin and Ira Parker, who also serves as showrunner. Parker previously worked as a writer and co-executive producer on the first season of House of the Dragon.

This is fantastic news for me. HBO is really showing that they're fully committed to the world of Game of Thrones. I'm especially pleased that we'll be getting something set in Westeros every year for the next few years, without any long breaks.

And Dunk & Egg, a warm, smaller adventure alongside the bombastic House of the Dragon, is exactly the change this world needs. I'm especially curious about those "epic battles" in HOTD season 3.

In short: this news simply makes me happy as a fan.

As long as the source material is good. George is behind on everything, and we can't expect anything more in terms of books. I'm afraid if they continue too long, we'll get the same thing that happened with GoT.

I totally get your point. There's always a risk when a series starts to outpace the books, especially in a world as complex as Martin's. But the difference from Game of Thrones is that both House of the Dragon and Dunk & Egg are based entirely on completed source material (Fire & Blood and the novellas).

That's right! The second installment of the Targaryans has yet to be released, but the Dance of Dragons has been told.
I am not familiar with the Dunk & Egg books.
