In Search of... is an American documentary which is aired on Syfy. The series premiered on April 17th, 1977.
The show, devoted to mysterious phenomena, was created after the success of three one-hour documentaries produced by creator Alan Landsburg, all of which featured narration by Rod Serling, who was the initial choice to host the spin-off show. Serling died before production started, and Leonard Nimoy was then selected to be the host.
The series was revived with host Mitch Pileggi in 2002 (season 7).
The episodes each last about 22 minutes and are about all kinds of phenomena that are still the subject of many series. UFOs, Atlantis, Loch Ness, Voodoo, Pyramids. But also about special people like Amelia Earhart, Jim Jones and Jimmy Hoffa.
The music in the series is also immediately recognizable as 70s, with vague synthesizer sounds and such and just a little bit out of tune. Finally, the old-fashioned 4:3 aspect ratio really throws you back to that time.
I love watching these kinds of series and seeing how they looked at it 50 years ago and what they knew back then.
The entire series is now on YouTube. Search for "In Search of... (tv series)" and you will find two playlists with all the episodes.
There was a seventh season in 2002 with Mitch Pileggi as host, known as Mulder and Scully's boss in the X-Files. The episodes are about 44 minutes long. And here too, a playlist can be found on YouTube.
I came across this series through the new 2018 series "In Search of...". It is narrated by Zachary Quinto who, perhaps not coincidentally, plays Mr. Spock in the last three Star Trek films from the 2000s :-)
