Kassa Kassa - First episode

Kassa Kassa is a comedic drama series set in a neighborhood supermarket facing trouble.
Tom Lenaerts, who broke through in the television world with Schalkse Ruiters and was later responsible for other programs such as several quizzes and a number of highly acclaimed TV series like De Parelvissers, Met man en macht, Over Water, and Twee Zomers, was asked by VRT to create a potential successor to De Kampioenen. After several attempts to replicate that success, they now hope that Tom can present a series to the public that will last for several years.

The creators also managed to secure a few seasoned actors such as Van Vlees en Bloed phenomenon Herwig Ilegems, Robbie Cleiren, An Miller, and Else Dottermans. Add to that one of the best actors in Flanders, Jan Decleir, and you'd think it's a surefire hit.

But even if you dress a monkey in gold, it remains an ugly thing, because this brand-new Flemish series, Kassa Kassa, certainly hasn't become a high-flyer. The story of two brothers who struggle to survive with their supermarket definitely provides ample opportunity for plenty of hilarious moments. However, you see them coming from a mile away, they are absolutely not funny, and they drag the story down. The actors may try their best, but the script absolutely does not work in their favor. After 25 minutes, I had no desire whatsoever to press the button for the next episode, please.

From Tom Lenaerts and his production company Panenka, I expected much more than what is currently being served. Better luck next time, Tom, but preferably not with more Kassa Kassa, because that's definitely not it.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
