Law & Order: Special Victims Unit renewed for a 28th season

NBC takes another impressive step in television history by renewing Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for a 28th season.
With the renewal of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, the series strengthens its status as the longest-running primetime drama series ever on American television. The renewal for the 2026-2027 season had been known internally for some time but has now been officially confirmed.

With this new series of episodes, the show is also approaching another milestone: breaking the 600-episode mark. Currently, the count is nearly at 594 episodes, bringing the legendary record of the classic CBS Western series Gunsmoke (635 episodes) within reach.

The series has been carried by Mariska Hargitay from the start, who still stars in the lead role. She is joined by Ice-T, Peter Scanavino, and Kelli Giddish, among others. Behind the scenes, Dick Wolf remains a driving force behind the franchise.

The announcement comes after another series from the same universe, Law & Order: Organized Crime, was canceled after five seasons. No definitive decision has yet been made about the fate of the original series Law & Order, which is currently in its 25th season (following a revival in 2022).
