Legion - Season 1

I love Marvel movies and the shows that fit into the X-men universe. A show where mutants are the main characters fits right into my alley. Because of that, I was very excited for the new Marvel show 'Legion'.

David Haller (Dan Stevens, Downton Abbey) is a mutant with tremendous powers. He only thinks that he actually suffers from schizophrenia. He goes through various mental institutions until he falls in love with Sidney Barret (Rachel Keller, Fargo). Through her he arrives at a campus filled with mutants. A place where his own kind helps him to control his powers and where it slowly becomes clear that David is able to travel through time and reshape reality. These are powers that evil people, such as 'The Eye', would like to either use or destroy.

Legion is definitely a unique show, which could be described as a bit peculiar. The way the story is told is remarkable and you're bombarded with flashbacks and fake memories. A superhero show, that is unlike any other.

Season 1 consists of only 8 episodes. At first I really thought that this was an amazing show. I was able to keep track of everything and I found myself glued to the screen. Unfortunately, this feeling started to fade away after several episodes. I struggled to understand what was going on. Legion is a show where you really have to keep paying attention all of the time. Lots and lots of little story elements are provided and they all have to be connected to each other. Flashbacks are shown and these will often transition into real time. I didn't really think that the story was interesting, but that may be due to the fact that I wasn't aware of what was realistic and what wasn't. Despite the fact that this is part of the show, it annoyed me greatly. I had no idea what was going on.

I did, however, think that the cast was great. Dan Stevens portrayed the main character really well. His struggle with the voices in his head and his anxieties was convincing. After a while he learns to embrace it, which makes all of it feel a bit more natural.

I have decided to not watch season 2. But if you thought that season 1 was interesting and you were able to keep track of things, then I wish you a lot of fun with the second season.
