Lilyhammer - Season 1

It’s not easy, being a gangster in New York. When Frank ‘The Fixer’ Tagliano (Steven van Zandt) doesn’t get along with the new head of the family and the new boss even kills his dog Lily, he’s had enough and testifies against his former friends. He's put in the witness protection program and Frank gets to pick where he wants to be relocated. He chooses the Norwegian city of Lillehammer, pronounced by Frank as Lilyhammer, remembering it fondly from the 1994 Winter Olympics. However, on arrival the city isn’t quite as glamorous as it seemed to be on television…

The show focuses on the troublesome integration of Frank in Lillehamer, having taken on the new identity of Giovanni Henriksen. To his horror, he discovers that his new neighbor, Laila Hovland (Anne Krigsvoll) is a police agent, and Frank’s first meeting with the naturalization and employment official Jan Johanson (Fridtjov Såheim) isn’t very successful either. Luckily, Frank also meets the charming teacher Sigrid (Marian Saastad Ottesen) and her six-year old son, Jonas (Mikael Aksnes-Pehrson), and he manages to befriend the not-so-bright Torgeir (Trond Fausa Aurvåg), Roar (Steinar Sagen), and Arne (Tommy Karlsen Sandum). Using his old tricks of blackmail, extortion, and violence, Frank manages to turn his luck around; he becomes the owner of a night club and takes over the criminal underworld in Lillehammer, for so far it exists. Frank’s mafioso habits provide many funny moments, and his many clashes with the Norwegian culture give the show a comedic tone. However, the humor in the show is black humor, so it is an acquired taste.

Frank is played by Steven Van Zandt; Van Zandt is mainly a musician and is one of the members of Bruce Springsteen’s band, but he is also known for playing Silvio Dante, a gangster similar to Frank, in The Sopranos. Van Zandt is also a co-writer of the show, together with Anne Bjǿrnstad and Eilif Skodvin. Van Zandt plays an over-the-top character, who looks the part of a stereotypical gangster. The other characters in the show, despite having many quirks of their own, are played a bit more subtle and natural, making it easier for the viewer to sympathize with them. Whilst the characters are all well-developed, the episodes all follow a similar structure: Frank does something to anger Sigrid, and then wants to make it up to her, meanwhile trying to hide his shady businesses from her. Even though the structure of the episodes is predictable, it’s not a big problem, since the formula is always filled in an original and entertaining manner.

Lilyhammer is a Netflix original, and it is a Norwegian-American co-production, which was shot on location in Norway. A second season is on its way and I for one can’t wait to see what kind of trouble Frank manages to get himself into in his continuing process of naturalization in Lillehammer.
