Locke & Key - Season 3

The third and final season is not the best, but I still recommend it.
The third season of Locke & Key was filmed at the same time as the second (back-to-back). It, therefore, fits seamlessly with the second season, but only has eight episodes instead of ten.

Two months after the end of season two, things are quiet in Matheson and Key House. Kinsey and Bode have fun with the keys. Mama Nina has finally found peace, now that she knows the secret of her home. Her drinking problem is therefore also gone. The evil demon Dodge has been destroyed and Tyler comes to terms with Jackie's death in Montana.

Not much happens at the beginning of the season, it seems as if the inspiration of the screenwriters has dried up. Or does it have to do with the fact that for the first time, a new story had to be written that is not based on the original comic? A new demon has finally emerged in the form of the eighteenth-century captain Frederick Gideon. Eden had dug it up in the previous finale, but her role has been completely played out in this season. Personally, I think that's a loss, because I loved this spicy bad girl.

Gideon has no knowledge of the present and initially does not even know the power of the magic keys. Initially, he does not pose much of a threat. The story quietly continues and an episode seems to consist of: the discovery of yet another new key and the often negative consequences of using it. Only in the course of episode three, after a surprising plot twist, does the series come back under steam. From then on, it's all hands on deck to avert the end of the world and defeat Gideon. However, the grand finale already takes place at the beginning of the last episode, which mainly consists of saying goodbye to the characters.

Netflix had already decided, even before the first broadcast, that this season would be the last. Officially, the story had been told. However, it seems that they only had material for five episodes. The season was stretched to eight episodes due to the slow start and a much too long ending. In the first episode, a number of new characters are introduced, but not much happens with them.

Recently, rumors surfaced that there would still be a sequel, possibly as a film, because the story would not have been fully told. Given the way this season ends, a sequel with the current cast seems out of the question, though, with magic, anything is possible. A prequel is also possible, with a return to the past of Rendell Locke.

Despite the somewhat disappointing scenario, it is once again enjoyable to enjoy the beautiful sets, the special effects, the technical qualities and the acting performances of the young actors, especially Emilia Jones as Kinsey. If you still want to see or know more about Locke & Key, I can recommend the excellent comic on which this series is based.

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

Personally, I thought the third season was the worst season. If you liked Emilia Jones's acting in this series, you should definitely watch the film Coda. She acts phenomenally in that.
