Lockwood & Co. - First episode

In the first episode, Lockwood & Co. far from innovative, but thanks to nice actors and the nice atmosphere it is still pleasant to watch.
Netflix has a thing for supernatural teen series and they are happy to expand that catalog. Also, the newest member, Lockwood & Co. seems to fit all the requirements exactly. Despite the fact that it shows many similarities with recent series from the same genre, it seems to be a nice series for the time being.

Britain has been plagued by countless ghosts for years. And then who do you call? No, not the Ghostbusters. In the absence of a better alternative, teenagers with a sense of the supernatural are being trained en masse to become ghost fighters. But the work is dangerous, as is evident in the class of Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes, Bridgerton). After a deadly incident, she leaves school and heads to London to join the ghost-hunting team of the eccentric Archie Lockwood (Cameron Chapman).

The storyline has some illogical moments

You can ask a lot of questions about the premise of Lockwood & Co. Where do those ghosts come from? Why can certain teens sense these ghosts? And why are parents en masse enrolling their children to become ghost hunters, knowing that this will almost mean certain death? The reason for letting Lucy become a ghost hunter is a bit far-fetched and unlikely. But if you ignore those illogical moments, it's quite a fun series.

The first episode is quite smooth and manages through a quick edit to explain exactly what the situation is in Great Britain and how ghosts can best be fought. Although we haven't seen a lot of supernatural scum on screen yet, the world-building, which is an important process in series like this, is done in a fun way. Here and there it is a bit predictable and a major twist in the story you can see coming from miles away. But this does not spoil the viewing pleasure.

The main characters make this series fun to watch

The main characters are also fun. Ruby Stokes is a fun actress and does well with Cameron Chapman. Archie's right-hand man George (Ali Hadji-Hesmati) is also a nice addition to the whole. Apart from them, we have seen few other actors in action. In future episodes, we will hopefully see some more experienced actors like Ivanno Jeremiah (Humans) and Morven Christie (Grantchester).

The first episode of Lockwood & Co. is far from innovative and the beginning is a bit far-fetched. Nevertheless, the implementation of the well-known idea is nicely done thanks to a brisk pace and good actors. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season!

About the writer, Karzal

Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.

Good review that matches my view, twice :-) I have now seen the first three episodes and what I like is that there is not a "case of the week" (although it seems that way at first) but there is a story is spread over several episodes. That gives the opportunity for more depth and fewer and quicker endings. So far I am very pleased with this "young adult" series and will soon continue with the rest of the season.
