Lost in space (2018) - Season 2

After 18 months, the second season of Lost in Space was finally released on Netflix in December 2019. After the first season, the space family has gotten used to the danger and know how to deal with it. They have stranded on a fairly inhospitable planet alongside manipulative doctor Smith (Parker Posey, Louie) and the opportunistic major Don West (Ignacio Serricchio, Bones). Just to be sure, the family has imprisoned Dr Smith. The Robinsons have used their creativity to build a greenhouse to grow food. The first episode of the season fittingly featured Christmas and various homemade gifts.

It doesn't take long before the Robinsons figure out that they have to leave the planet they're currently on. The sets from the first couple of episodes look extraordinarily well. They're convincing and outstanding if you take into account that this is a television series. The way the planet and the damaged space ship Jupiter 2 are shown is impressive. The second season revolves around how the Robinsons and the mothership, the Resolute, are going to find the habitable planet Alpha Centauri.

The Robinson family are still at the centre stage. Mother Maureen Robinson (Molly Parker, House of Cards) and father John Robinson (Toby Stephens, Black Sails) are back together. Through flashbacks, we are given extra information about the characters, just like in the first season. Most flashbacks of season two feature the children. This is how we are given insight into the life of the adopted Judy, and with the help of Penny's book, we get to see exactly what her position within the family is. In the meanwhile, Will Robinson has grown from a young boy into a pubescent teen. His companion, the robot, is also back. Will has doubts about the robot and if it will protect them if it needs to.

[quote-3844]I think that the ten new episodes are constructed well and serve as a fitting sequel to the first season. A lot of money has been invested in the series, and that is easy to see. Dr Smith is one of the most fascinating characters, even during this season you're never sure what she's thinking and whether or not she has good or bad intentions. Nonetheless, the family needs her to fight the elements and political games on the Resolute. In the final episodes, the family and their travelling companions find themselves near Alpha Centauri. From the final scenes in the final episode, it becomes clear that this planet has a few surprises in store.
