Lost remains a phenomenal series even more than twenty years after its premiere. The DVD of the second season is a superb production of a strong series.
The television series Lost was a television phenomenon in the first decade of this century.
The television series Lost was a television phenomenon in the first decade of this century. Starting in 2004, the American series about the adventures of the crashed Flight 815 kept viewers glued to their screens for six seasons. After 121 episodes, the series concluded in May 2010.
The series remains popular. When Netflix Netherlands removed the series from its catalog in August 2025, fans didn't have long to mourn. In September 2025, Disney+ announced that it had added the complete series to its streaming subscribers in the Netherlands.
This second season may have been the series' high point. The first season had a thrilling open ending, and the events in the second season's episodes add an extra dimension. The characters are more fully developed, and the creators are masterful at maintaining the suspense. I'm thrilled to see familiar faces like Michael Emerson, Jorge Garcia, Daniel Dae Kim, and Michelle Rodríguez.
In 2006, the first part of the second season of Lost was released on DVD. This means that Buena Vista Home Entertainment split the season into two parts. The twelve episodes are contained on three discs, which ensures good picture quality and excellent sound (in Dolby Digital 5.1). The episodes are available in English, French, and Spanish. Subtitles are available in Dutch, French, English (also for the deaf and hard of hearing), Spanish, and the four Scandinavian languages.
It's a shame the extras aren't clearly labeled on the cover. It only says "with bonus material," which hardly serves as a promotional material for this DVD. Furthermore, the cover art is misspelled and uninspiring. Fortunately, the content is much better. Three audio commentaries are available. One is by producers Damon Lindelof, Carlton Cuse, Bryan Burke, and Jack Bender for the first episode, "Man of Science, Man of Faith." They also provide commentary for the tenth episode, "The 23rd Psalm." In addition, actress Evangeline Lilly and directors Paul Edwards and Michael Bon-Billain provide commentary for the episode "What Kate Did."
The remaining extras are available on a special bonus disc. These include two new flashbacks from the sixth episode, "Abandoned," totaling two minutes. The documentary "Lost on Location" is a thirty-minute retrospective on the making of the episodes. This documentary is divided into chapters based on the episode, featuring interviews with the actors and behind-the-scenes footage.
There's also a brief look at the writing of the series, in the form of Flashbacks and Mythology, each lasting about seven minutes. Finally, there are eleven excised scenes, photos from the set, and a very strange promotional video for the first season of the British Channel 4. There are also hidden extras (so-called "Easter eggs") for those interested. This DVD release, from about twenty years ago, is a prime example of how a television series should be released: with excellent picture and sound quality and varied and interesting extras.
About the writer, Karzal
Mike (1995) has been a member of MySeries since 2016 and is mainly active on the English version of the site. Since 2018, he has been actively translating news articles, columns, reviews and basically everything that ends up on the Dutch site. The original articles, columns and reviews were actually written by others. During the week Mike can be found at IKEA, where he is a national systems specialist and occasionally also in the classroom to teach an English lesson. In addition, Mike logically enjoys watching series and has actually been spoon-fed this from an early age. The genre doesn't matter, there is a place for everything in the otherwise busy life.
I've had the complete series box set for several years now. It started out as a fantastic mystery series with great actors and a very intriguing story. Unfortunately, it slumped somewhat in later seasons, and the final season is practically unwatchable. This disappointing final season was only surpassed by Season 8 of Game of Thrones :-)
But I've never regretted buying this box set and have already watched it twice. Another binge is on my to-do list, but that might take a while.
