Luther - The Fallen Sun

With the film The Fallen Sun, the Luther series gets a flashy sequel that does exactly what you can expect from it.

In 2019, the television series Luther ended after five seasons. However, creator Neil Cross was far from done with detective John Luther. Even before the fifth season was even confirmed, there was already talk of a movie. And don't blame Cross and his associates. Several successful British series, including Spooks and Downton Abbey, have moved to the big screen. Also, the end of season five left enough room to tell even more about Luther's life. And that is also evident in the movie Luther: The Fallen Sun.

At the end of season five, Luther was arrested and at the beginning of the film, he is in prison. When a killer he never caught contacts him, Luther realizes there's only one thing he can do: break out and catch the killer before he kills more.

Despite nice production values, the story rattles at times

Actually, The Fallen Sun is just a very long episode of the series with a bigger budget. It is clear that more money has been put into it. The locations are set up on a grander scale and the action looks slicker. This film has also taken over the tension and oppressive atmosphere from the series well. Action and dialogue alternate perfectly, and in this area it offers exactly what makes Luther so attractive.

The storyline, on the other hand, is a bit weak at times. The cat-and-mouse game between Luther and the killer is exciting, but sometimes things are a little predictable. Of course, the killer escapes after his first confrontation with Luther. You can also see the way he makes the case personal for Luther and the police from a mile away. Furthermore, some illogical steps have to be taken in the beginning to get Luther out of prison, for example. Also, certain things come a little too easily to him. The police, for example, forgive him very quickly after he has been released. But if you ignore this and enjoy all the other good things about this film, it doesn't bother you. It's just an exciting and entertaining movie.

The big part of this movie is Idris Elba as John Luther

The big part of this movie is of course Idris Elba (The Wire) as John Luther. Every moment he's on screen, he's Luther. His imposing stature and charisma are unmistakable and in that respect, it is pure enjoyment. Andy Serkis (Little Dorrit) is also wonderfully creepy as a serial killer and Cynthia Erivo (The Outsider) offers enough counterweight as Odette Raine, the new department head of Luther's old police department.

It is a pity that few characters from the television series return in the film. Other than Luther, the only other familiar face is his old boss Martin Schenk (Dermot Crowley, Father Figure). That is not surprising, because most of Luther's former colleagues have died over the years. But who was really missing, and who might have taken this whole thing to the next level, is Luther's former sidekick Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson, His Dark Materials).

All in all, The Fallen Sun is an exciting continuation of the beloved television series. If you want to accept that the story is a bit mediocre at times, then it's just a fun movie. The ending of the movie leaves enough room for a possible sequel, and I wouldn't say no to that at all. Although I really hope that Alice will be there.
