Man vs Bee - Season 1

A clumsy house sitter allowed to stay in a state-of-the-art home accompanied by a tenacious bee. Man vs Bee has enough ingredients for an entertaining and comical snack.

Trevor Bingley (Rowan Atkinson, Mr. Bean) has recently taken up a new job at House Sitters Deluxe. Life finally smiles on him, because he can immediately start working as a house sitter for the Kolstad-Bergenbatten family. This family owns a state-of-the-art house and likes it when they can leave their precious home in safe hands when they go on vacation for a while.

Trevor is having a great time and couldn't wish for a better and nicer first job. The only thing he has to get used to is the number of smart solutions that the house has to offer. For example, the kitchen cabinets can be opened with one simple hand movement, the tap can also be operated with a number of hand movements and the house is equipped with a security system that can be operated with two codes. Fortunately, Trevor doesn't have to remember everything, because the family has been kind enough to leave an extensive manual. The house is fully equipped, so what could go wrong?

Because of this bee, Trevor's stay becomes a true hell.

In the previous section I forgot to mention that Trevor is not alone in the house. Along with his arrival at the house, one has crept into the house. Because of this bee, Trevor's stay becomes a true hell. Perhaps some examples are in order. Trevor is enjoying yogurt for breakfast and accidentally smears it on his sock while trying to shoo the bee away. The bee then makes its way from the sock to the trouser leg. Just then the police call and the scene that follows is one of the many hilarious moments this series has to offer. Trevor speaks nicely to the officer and meanwhile pulls the craziest antics because of the bee that camps in his pants. All attempts Trevor makes to catch the bee mainly result in disastrous consequences for the house or the house dog Cupcake.

What I personally enjoyed is Trevor's fumbling with modern equipment. He tries to open a kitchen cabinet with all kinds of swinging movements, but he just can't. He becomes so despondent that he collapses to the floor and sits with his hands on his head, after which a kitchen cupboard opens. Instead of finding out how he managed to do this, Trevor spends the rest of the series trying to open a kitchen cabinet with his hands on his head.

The home's security codes are based on years of fictional battles. For example: to open is 1748, battle at Friswilhelden and to close is 1513, battle at Bulhornbører. According to the owner, these are easy reminders for the codes. But Trevor has trouble remembering it and soon enters the wrong code too many times. Fortunately, the system has a backup, the system can respond to voice recognition from the owner. Trevor then puts on his most beautiful female voice to shout the security code.

People will know Rowan Atkinson for his iconic portrayal of Mr. Bean. He is always praised for his inimitable mimicry and accompanying silly movements. He makes comedy look so simple when it's incredibly hard to actually make people laugh. I don't think any other actor can create such an entertaining series with these limited resources. Put any other person in a house with an annoying bee around them and everyone would think what you're actually looking at, but with Rowan Atkinson, I don't have that feeling and that's a gift. Without Rowan Atkinson, the series wouldn't be that hilarious.

An extremely entertaining snack for when you're in the mood to watch something lighthearted

I have the impression that the makers of this series initially had a film in mind when you look at the running time and the course of the series. In total, the playing time is just over an hour and a half and this playing time is divided into nine episodes. In addition, the episodes flow seamlessly into each other and if you were to watch the first season in one sitting, it will feel like a movie. The choice to make a series of it works out well, because I don't know if you would draw full houses with a concept like this in the form of a film.

Is it the best comedy series you've ever seen? Probably not, but it's still an extremely entertaining snack for when you're in the mood to watch something lighthearted.
