French series Marie Antoinette renewed for second season

The historical series Marie Antoinette has been given a second season. The series has been given an early renewal due to its global popularity.

Emilia Schüle (Treadstone) and Louis Cunningham (Bridgerton) play the lead roles and are supported by writer Deborah Davis (The Favorite). Meanwhile, audiences can expect the next season's vision to come together courtesy of director Ed Bazalgette (The Last Kingdom, Doctor Who) who will direct the first four episodes.

The first season of the series follows the story of young Marie Antoinette (Schüle), who rises to the peerage and marries Louis XVI (Cunningham), making her the Dauphine of France at the age of fourteen. The story of Marie Antoinette, a story suitable for the big and small screen, has been told many times over the years. The divided noblewoman would eventually come to be known as France's last queen before the system fell during the French Revolution.

The second season continues with the story of the hated mistress, who lives more lavishly than ever while her people live in poverty. We'll see more action in the sequel as Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI quickly become the symbols of everything wrong with nobility as the clock ticks down to the bloody revolution.

The second season is being written by Louise Ironside, Francesca Forristal, Charlotte Wolfe and Andrew Bampfield. All of them, except Ironside, are new to the series' writers' room. It's a big year for historical dramas with Netflix coming out with The Pale Blue Eye and Starz coming out with their version of the beloved Dangerous Liaisons story before that. While the latter was initially renewed for a second season even before the first season had premiered, the network would eventually pull the plug after a string of negative critical reviews.

With a premiere of 2.1 million viewers on BBC Two and iPlayer in the UK, Marie Antoinette's ratings are very good. In addition, the series is very successful in other European countries and the United States where the series is broadcast on PBS.

While the cast list has yet to be announced, we can probably expect some familiar faces for next season, including Marthe Keller (The Romanoffs), Gaia Weiss (Vikings), James Purefoy (Rome), Jack Archer (Call the Midwife), Oscar Lesage, Roxane Duran (Riviera), and Jasmine Backborow (Shadow and Bone).

Filming for Marie Antoinette's second season begins this fall.
