Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. – Season 1

Many series based on comic books have been created over the past couple of years. From ‘Smallville’ to ‘Arrow’, almost every superhero has had a series or episode revolving around them. The newest series to this genre is ‘Marvel’s Agents' of S.H.I.E.L.D.’. Last year the show premiered on ABC America, and Veronica in the Netherlands has aired the full first series as well earlier this year. I love this genre, although I haven’t read much comics throughout my life. I didn’t know any of the background stories to this series as well so I started it completely blank.

Agent Phil Coulson's team (Clark Gregg, ‘The New Adventures of Old Christine’) is what ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ is all about. Coulson is a familiar name from ‘The Avengers’ movie, in which he seemed to have died at the end. During the pilot we discover however that he was brought back to life thanks to some new technology. Many episodes of the first series will be about Coulson’s search for the truth and what made him live through all that. Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen, ‘ER’), an ice-cold pilot and experienced agent, is one of Coulson’s team members. Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) is a specialist with a lot of field experience who holds an important place in his team. Academic duo Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker, ‘The Fades’) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge, ‘Hollyoaks’) are the brains behind many missions. And last, but not least, there’s newcomer Skye (Chloe Bennet, ‘Nashville’), a computer hacker searching for answers about her past.

A fun fact about the series is that a lot of actors that played parts in ‘The Avengers’ movie will make an appearance during this season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ as well. Cobie Smulders (‘How I Met Your Mother’) for instance, will play Maria Hill again. And blockbuster movie actor Samuel L. Jackson will play a small part as director Nick Fury, a role he portrayed in the movie as well. I didn’t know all of this before watching the series so it was a nice surprise seeing so many familiar faces appear on screen. The pilot was written and directed by Joss Whedon, who is famous for creating supernatural series like ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘Firefly’. An impressive list of cast and crewmembers who have already proven themselves in the TV of movie industry.

The first season tells the story of how agent Coulson’s team was assembled, and what secrets are being kept by all of the individual members. Without spoiling too much I can say that there are a lot of action scenes and unexpected twists ahead for the viewers. While some team members try to find out some things about their past, all of them face difficult and sometimes dangerous missions for S.H.I.E.L.D.. Moreover, the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters are involved in some drama of their own as well, which will slowly reach Agent Coulson’s team up to a point where it gets personal. The different cases, personal relationships and problems of all the team members are being shown nicely, which makes the series easy to watch and very entertaining.

I’m writing this review for people like myself who haven’t watched ‘The Avengers’ or any of the other films from that series and haven’t read any of the comics either but do like this genre. I can really recommend this show if you’re someone like that, cause after watching this season I really have become a fan! Maybe die-hard fans will notice some mistakes, small things that I don’t see as an ‘outsider’. But in my opinion this was a great first season. The chemistry between the cast members is great, the excitement and action is also fine and there’s plenty of stuff left to fill several seasons with in the future. The humor is something I’d like to point out in particular as well, cause there were times I really laughed out loud watching some of the scenes. There’s not much depth in the series, that’s one critique I will make even though there is some personal drama here and there. But for the action lover who doesn’t like an over-emotional story but does however love a bit of humor every now and then, I could definitely recommend ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’. It’s not one of the best series I’ve ever seen, but I am sure looking forward to season two!
