Masters of Sex - Pilot
Let's get straight to the point, regarding the subject: (faking) females orgasms. Many people deal with it. Men structurally deny that their partner does it, while women know better. This particular issue is the basis for the research that is central to the pilot episode of 'Masters of Sex', a new drama series from Showtime. After all, sex sells, right?
Dr. William Masters (Michael Sheen) and his assistant Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan, 'True Blood') try their utmost to get enough funding for this research. Masters is a respected doctor and puts his reputation on the line to get what he wants. According to his vision, this study is groundbreaking and worthy of a Nobel-prize. His superior just thinks it's perverse and that it attracts negative publicity.
Masters of Sex is not a smutty, lowbrow series, something I was afraid of before I began watching it. It's a show that perfectly reflects the time we live in and where it's obvious that the sexual revolution has not yet taken place. One shouldn't shy away from a naked body here and there, but you don't actually see a whole lot more than in a regular show containing love affairs.
The series doesn't solely focus on the research: attention will go out to Dr. Masters marriage, which doesn't run smoothly. Masters and his wife Libby (Caitlin Fitzgerald) desperately want to start a family , which will go not without problems. This soon becomes obvious, including all the consequences. Johnson also has her personal problems, which we can enjoy first hand.
To get back to my previous statement: sex sells. This series is a prime example of it. The pilot might not be refreshing and provocative, but it still makes you want to continue watching. Showtime delivers a series of HBO quality. Story and aesthetics are chosen over fast action images. Last Sunday was the official premiere of the series, but the ratings aren't known to me yet. However, it would surprise me if they were disappointing.
