Mistresses (US) - Pilot
A mistress: ‘A woman in a powerful position, who is engaging in a continuous sexual relationship with a married man.’
'Mistresses (US)' is an American series based on a British series with the same title. This new show, broadcast by ABC America, is supposed to fill the hole that the now-gone 'Desperate Housewives' has left behind. Personally, I have no knowledge of 'Desperate Housewives', but I know enough to say that 'Mistresses' doesn’t immediately give the impression that it’s going to be a top-notch series.
The beginning of the first episode is a sequence of several shots of a couple making out. Dresses are being slid up, there is some ruffling and shaking of hair, and the desk is being freed of papers. Soon enough I was tempted to stop watching, mainly because it somewhat awakens a Fifty Shades of Grey sensation. It appeared to not be all too bad, so I definitely encourage to continue watching anyway. After ten minutes it became clear that there is some depth to the story, which aroused my curiosity.
The series is based on four friends, whose lives are somewhat intertwined with extramarital love affairs. Savannah (Alyssa Milano, 'Charmed') is a successful lawyer, who has been trying to have children with her husband. They find out that he is the one responsible for the problems with fathering a child, and that doesn’t fall on good ground. This realisation causes her to search her pleasure elsewhere, leading into a sexual relationship with her colleague Dominic (Jason George). Her sister Josslyn (Jex Macallan) is a real estate agent who is having an affair with her married boss. Then there is Karen (Yunjim Kim, 'Lost'), a psychiatrist engaging in an affair with a patient. When it appeared that the man was about to die, she prescribed a lethal dose of medicine so he could relieve himself of pain, should it be too much. However, after his death, his son finds out that his father had an affair with a woman and asks Karen for information, not knowing that she was his dad’s mistress. And finally there’s April (Rochelle Aytes), who is the one on the painful side of the mistress story, because she finds out that her dear departed husband was sexually involved with someone else.
The series is fast-paced, and as a result many things happen in one episode. This might leave little space for the viewer’s imagination. The life stories of the women aren’t all equally strong, which gives it a rather imbalanced feel. It makes me doubt whether I want to know the same amount about all four storylines, because some seem less interesting than others. That is a pity because the series definitely has potential to grow. After one episode alone, you can’t say all that much about the series as a whole, but it leaves me curious the rest. I’m not certain if I’ll follow the rest of the series, because I don’t think it’ll be a ‘must-see’. It will probably end up in the category of ‘I’ll watch that later’. However, even though it might not be a top-notch series yet, the concept is good enough to grow into something fun!
