National Treasure: Edge of History canceled by Disney after one season

National Treasure: Edge of History, the television sequel to Nicolas Cage's blockbuster film series, has been canceled at Disney+ after one season.
The series centers on a young woman who is put on a trail of clues with ties to America's past that may also help her discover the truth about her family's past and her long-dead father. With the return of Justin Bartha and Harvey Keitel, National Treasure: Edge of History nevertheless received mixed to negative reviews from critics, which seems to be catching up with the series.

Despite talks of a second season for National Treasure: Edge of History on Disney+, and even speculation about Cage appearing, that won't happen as the series has been canceled, according to Deadline. With this cancellation, another highly acclaimed Disney+ series meets an untimely demise, following Big Shot (2021), The Mighty Ducks (2021): Game Changers, The Mysterious Benedict Society, Diary of a Future President and Turner & Hooch. These series all had the same fate.

National Treasure: Edge of History

Disney knows what it's all about with big franchises like Star Wars and Marvel, and it was clearly hoping National Treasure could join those whoppers by delivering some Disney+ content. Another National Treasure series could still happen, of course, but the fact that Edge of History didn't catch on, and got the early ax doesn't bode well for the future of the franchise.

There is, of course, another avenue for National Treasure as a big-screen franchise, where the original films grossed a combined total of more than $800 million worldwide. Speculation continues about the possibility of National Treasure 3 one day fueled by comments from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who confirmed last December that development is still ongoing. With Cage going through some sort of career resurgence in recent years, the time seems right for National Treasure 3 to finally happen, with even speculation for National Treasure: Edge of History to set up the next movie, which could still happen, but now seems unlikely.

National Treasure: Edge of History with only one season seems to suggest that the franchise has nothing left in the tank, but it could also be that the series just isn't catching on with fans of the movies, and those same fans would still happily buy movie tickets. buy to watch Cage's Benjamin Gates go on another adventure. It'll be interesting to see what news emerges about the franchise as a whole after Disney+ prematurely ended its acclaimed National Treasure: Edge of History.

Maybe the bigwigs will finally realize that not every reasonably successful film or film series lends itself to a "universe". And the fact that Cage was replaced by a woman in the series may not have helped either. I'm actually very happy with this. The ideas of poverty in Hollywood are starting to take their revenge. Who knows, maybe they will now give something completely new a chance instead of just recycling old things (like Harry Potter and Twilight).
