New Amsterdam (2018) - First episode
I will come straight to the point. Another medical drama. Innovative? No. Entertaining? Yes, it sure is. The story is quite simple. New Amsterdam is the oldest public hospital of America, but it is no longer a good hospital. You can safely say it is a run-down hospital. Filled with greedy doctors who care more about making money than their patients. The hospital needs a lot of improvements and the new medical director, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold, The Blacklist) is tasked with that challenge.
But Max also has to deal with some personal issues. He is estranged from his pregnant wife Georgia (Lisa O'Hare). At the end of the first episode Max receives a panicky call from his wife, she is bleeding and she is afraid for the baby. Fortunately everything works out fine and it's revealed the girl will be called Luna. What a coincidence! Furthermore, it turns out that Max also has medical problems which are quite serious.
The supporting cast doesn't seem that interesting at first glance, because the story of the main character needs to be told first, of course. But the other characters do have potential. Lauren Bloom (Janet Montgomery) is an emergency doctor who is smart and efficient, but never sees the bad in people. Floyd (Jocko Sims) is the only cardiac surgeon who Max allows to stay because he is sincere. A flirtation between these two characters is not very convincing yet, but who knows how this will develop. Iggy (Tyler Labine) works with sick and displaced children and doctor Vijay (Anupam Kher) is somewhere between all these characters.

But Luna died a few years later because of a preventable hospital infection. He uses his own story as a warning: no one should die of something that's preventable. Max's motto is: I work for you, so you can work for your patients. He doesn't waste time on doctors who waste their patients' time. If you don't want to be a proper doctor, then you need to leave. Like I said before, not really innovative but still, this episode managed to hold my attention. Maybe because I was surprised by Ryan Eggold in this part, maybe because I like medical dramas. But this first episode really managed to entertain me and invited me to watch and see what the next episode will bring.
