Corona crisis; which series to watch? Birgit Timmerman's top five

It has become a well-known image, empty supermarket shelves, empty squares and shopping malls. People work from home or not at all. How can you spend that time? We have made a top 5 displaying series you could watch in these peculiar times.
I like all kinds of series—even the depressing, dark, apocalyptic and disastrous kind. But I'm not going to recommend you to watch The Handmaid's Tale, Penny Dreadful, Chernobyl, Ray Donovan, Dark or Black Mirror. Instead, I will provide you with five happy, feel good and hilarious series. Cause those I like as well! I'll take you to some comfortable places so that you're able to escape the bizarre and dark period we're currently in.

5. The Good Place

Just the name will make you smile. And that's not the only thing. This entire series will make you happy. In The Good Place, you can always eat frozen yoghurt, you can fly, there are always parties, everyone is nice and Janet (not a girl), the smartest being in the universe, is always there for you. The Good Place revolves around the afterlife. The biggest mystery of our life. Where will we end up if we die, is there a heaven or hell? The creators of The Good Place answer that question in this series. There's a lot of creativity in this series. The Good Place is the only series in this top-five that has episodes that last twenty minutes. Good series if you need to fill some time, but you can watch it in one sitting. By now the series has been finished, with four seasons.

4. Jane the Virgin

My ultimate guilty pleasure. I've laughed, cried and cried while laughing. Jane the Virgin is full of sweet moments, cheesiness and over the top romance, but it manages to bring that in creative ways. Each episode is narrated by someone who takes you through the bizarre story of Jane. That narrator is a kind of buddy who takes place on the couch next to you and reacts just as surprised as you at everything that happens, and that is done incredibly well. The main character, Jane, is portrayed by Gina Rodriguez. She has won a Golden Globe for her acting performances in this series. As far as I'm concerned, that's completely justified. The series had five seasons in total.

3. Shameless (US)

Tip one to make you feel better; slapstick. This is something you'll see if you watch Frank Gallagher and his family. Shameless (US) is one of my all-time favourites. And that's because the series is never boring, not even after ten seasons! I dare you to find a series that manages to remain interesting after ten seasons. It is a pure dramedy. The things that family has to go through is truly dramatic but so hilarious to watch. They truly know no shame. Next to humour, the series contains a lot of depth. We can see the characters grow up together, and that can result in loving the characters a bit. And yes, even Frank Gallagher.

2. Outlander

The series that doesn't just take you to other places, but also to other times. Outlander is no light-hearted series and revolves around serious historical events, such as the disappearance of the Scotland clans, slavery and the American war for independence. It can be bloody at times. It may take a couple of episodes before you've really gotten into it, but once you're in, you don't want to get out. As far as I'm concerned Outlander is the perfect combination of adventure, politics, excitement, romance and Jamie Fraser.

1. This Is Us

The series that I have been recommending to friends and family since it first released. It is a series about life and family. And it can get very emotional. I must confess that I had to hold back some tears during each episode. It is one of the most beautiful and heart-warming series I've ever seen. The love between characters is almost tangible. Each character has been written so well and has so much depth. You do feel like you know them like you're part of that family. Because of them, I want to be a better person. The actors all deserve to win a Golden Globe. One of them won one, the fantastic Sterling K. Brown.

All of these series have plenty of seasons to keep you busy for a while, and next to that, they're incredibly addictive. That's why I leave with one final tip; go on a walk outside now and then. Soon there will be more top-five lists to keep you occupied.

Keep calm and watch series!
