Corona crisis; which series to watch? Mandy Gelling's top 5

It has become a well-known image, empty supermarket shelves, empty squares and shopping malls. People work from home or not at all. How can you spend that time? We have made a top 5 displaying series you could watch in these peculiar times.

I to wanted to create a top-five list. But yea, with so many good series it can be quite challenging to choose. I didn't have a clue. Maybe I should go with Fargo, or maybe Goliath or perhaps even Unbelievable. No, I should go with Dexter, Tin Star, 24, Unforgotten.... in the end, I decided to create a top-five based on my top-five. The five best and only series that I have ever given a ten.

5. When They See Us

Starting from the very first minute till long after I turned the tv off, this show touched me. Even now that I'm writing about it, I once again feel amazed, angry and powerless. When They See Us is a must-see for all those series lovers who love a beautiful story about the victory of justice, even if it appeared that justice wouldn't win. Only four episodes have been released on Netflix, but those four were amazing.

4. Sherlock Holmes (1984) en Sherlock

Thanks to the unsurpassed Jeremy Brett, the character Sherlock Holmes from the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was brought to life. For me, there was only one Sherlock, and that used to be Brett. Then in 2010, Benedict Cumberbatch came. He too managed to portray a credible and accurate Sherlock. Unfortunately, Sherlock Holmes (1984) can only be seen on DVD. Sherlock, starring Cumberbatch, can be seen on Netflix in most countries.

3. Line of Duty

I can't get enough of this show. It manages to build up excitement in a perfect way. The series knows how to keep a nearly 60-minute lasting interrogation interesting. This is a series (I only discovered one mistake) which is pretty much perfect. The timelines, the interrogations, the actors and the imagery all just work out. No 'pretty' detectives who wear high heels while following a suspect. No excessive shootouts or wild chases. Just great and amazing detective work.

2. The Bridge (2011)

I won't forget Saga Norén and her green Porsche soon. The Swedish/ Danish series keeps you on the edge of your set from the start till end. And that's all because of Swedish detective Saga (Sofia Helin). Thirty-eight episodes divided over four seasons, with two great antagonists, Kim Bodnia (Martin Rohde) and Hendrik Sabroe (Thure Lindhardt). I don't think there's many Scandinavian series that are better than The Bridge (2011).

1. Band of Brothers

This historical war series from HBO is one of the best of its kind. Unrefined, no unnecessary dialogues and no exaggerated acting or dramatic camera movement. The creators of this series understood very well that WW2 didn't need extra drama. We follow the Easy Company 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, US 101st Airborne Division. Their story begins in America and ends in Germany. Ten episodes I won't forget.

As far as I'm concerned, this top-five could've been a top 50 or top 100. It is challenging to create a top-five when there are so many good series to choose from. But here's some more, just in case; Peaky Blinders, The Crown, Ray Donovan, The Night Of, Penny Dreadful, Hannibal and The Young Pope. Soon there will be more top-fives to help you pass the time.
