©TV Series Finale - Walt Disney PicturesExpectations surrounding the project were high. The series was developed by Disney Branded Entertainment, a writers' room had already been set up, and part of the tax benefits granted to Disney in August were intended for this potential series. However, the bar for a reboot of Holes was also set very high. After consideration, Disney ultimately decided that the series version did not meet those ambitions and therefore chose not to continue with the pilot.
The new version of Holes would focus on Hayley, a teenage girl sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden forces the youth to dig holes daily, without it being clear why.
Besides Rudolph, Kinnear, and Bryant, the cast included Flor Delis Alicea, Anire Kim Amoda, Noah Cottrell, Iesha Daniels, Sophie Dieterlen, Alexandra Doke, and Maeve Press. The pilot was written by Alina Mankin, directed by Jac Schaeffer, and led by showrunner Liz Phang.
Although Holes is not moving forward, Disney+ continues to focus on youth and fantasy series. Percy Jackson and the Olympians, also from Disney Branded Television and 20th Television, is a big success: the second season has just been released, and the series has already been renewed for a third season.
Additionally, earlier this fall, Disney greenlit the pilot Eerie Prep, based on the children's book series Eerie Elementary, intended for both Disney+ and Disney Channel.
