Oscar and Emmy winner Kate Winslet has departed the Hulu drama series The Spot.Kate Winslet was originally attached to The Spot as a lead actress and executive producer. The project comes from creator and executive producer Ed Solomon, and is produced by A24. The series was ordered straight to series by Hulu in August of last year after a fierce bidding war.
Kate Winslet
According to sources, Winslet’s departure is largely a creative decision. Her decision is said to be partly due to the way the project evolved during development, which influenced the interpretation and approach to her role.
Other major actresses are currently in talks to take over the role. Production is still targeting a 2026 start, once the lead role has been recast. This isn’t the first time Hulu has experienced a similar situation: in 2021, Kate McKinnon left The Dropout , after which Amanda Seyfried was cast and later won an Emmy for her performance. Something similar happened last year, when Margaret Qualley pulled out of the upcoming limited series about Amanda Knox , with Grace Van Patten taking her place.
The Spot is written and created by Ed Solomon, who also serves as showrunner. The series centers on a successful surgeon (the role Winslet was set to play) and her teacher husband, who suspect she may be responsible for a fatal car accident involving a child. As they try to uncover the truth, dark secrets come to light that test their relationship, as they confront hidden feelings of guilt and betrayal.
