Abigail Spencer to Star Opposite Josh Charles in Best Medicine

Abigail Spencer, known for Rectify, will play the leading roles together with Josh Charles in Best Medicine, the new American series based on the long-running British dramedy Doc Martin.
In this new version of Doc Martin, Abigail Spencer plays the role of Louisa Glasson, a schoolteacher in a small fishing village on the east coast of the United States. Dr. Martin Best (played by Josh Charles) moves to this village after suddenly giving up his successful career as a surgeon in Boston.

Fox describes Best Medicine as an hour-long comedy-drama that sees Martin return to the small town where he used to spend his summers. The official description of the series reads: "Martin's blunt and sometimes downright rude demeanor doesn't sit well with the eccentric, demanding townspeople, especially local schoolteacher Louisa Glasson. But perseverance is the townspeople's life motto, and they may be just what the doctor needs."

Production on Best Medicine begins later this summer in New York. The series is scheduled to premiere in the 2025-2026 midseason on Fox.

From 2013 to 2016, Spencer played Amantha Holden in the SundanceTV drama series Rectify, for which she received a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination. She then went on to star as history professor Lucy Preston in the NBC science fiction series Timeless. She also had recurring roles on the series Mad Men (AMC), Hawthorne (TNT), Suits (USA Network) and Grey's Anatomy (ABC).
