Hilary Duff returns to Hulu for Pretty Ugly, a drama series in which she not only stars but also serves as an executive producer. In Pretty Ugly, the story revolves around Miranda Miller (Hilary Duff), a former teenage beauty pageant winner determined to make her ten-year-old daughter Bailey the most successful child model and beauty star in the US.

Miranda dreams of beauty deals and a reality show, but Bailey—who has been in the child beauty pageant world since she was three months old—is completely over it. Miranda, however, refuses to slow down: she is seven months pregnant and is already planning the career of her unborn daughter.
Meanwhile, her husband Ray, a nurse with a dubious pill addiction, is embroiled in an affair that leads to a pregnancy, and Miranda’s mother Joan—an isolated widow—plots a murder with… Jesus. The result, as the title suggests, is Pretty Ugly.
The series is based on the 2015 novel of the same name by Kirker Butler. Butler writes the script, while Silver Tree directs and also serves as an executive producer.
For Duff, this marks a new collaboration with production company 20th TV after How I Met Your Father, and she previously gained renewed popularity through her role in Younger.
For Butler, it’s another project with Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, with whom he previously worked on The Neighbors (ABC), Life in Pieces (CBS), and Housebroken (Fox).
