Series of the year 2020 - Best comedy series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2020 and discusses the category comedy series. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 4th and Monday, February 1st.
Now it's finally time to truly start nominating. This time, we'll talk about one of the most difficult categories: comedy series. Nothing is more personal than somebodies humor. Despite that, we've done our best to create a list featuring loads of series of which at least one should make you laugh. To compile this list, we used a lot of input from our readers.

Last year, a lot of comedy series that were part of this list would no longer return in 2020. Because of that, we were afraid that the options would be scarce. Luckily, the gap was quickly filled with lots of new and already existing series. Turns out, there were loads of series that could've been nominated but unfortunately, I couldn't nominate them all. We only have ten spots. If you have something else in mind, you can always decide to use a wildcard.

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominated series for this category in alphabetical order:

After Life

With praising reviews and a high average grade for the second season, it was unlikely that this series wouldn't end up being nominated. Ricky Gervais remains a master at combining comedy and drama and, as a result of that, manages to provide us with an amazing story about grieve. His acting performance manages to elevate it to one of the best comedy series of this year.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine has remained just as good after it moved to NBC. Despite the decrease in episodes, the writers still manage to provide us with that very same hilarious humour the series is well-known for. The actors perform at a very high level, which ensures that this series is one of the most fun comedy series on television.

Dead to Me

Sometimes, I think Dead to Me can no longer be categorised as a comedy series. Nonetheless, there is always a certain amount of humour in between the drama. This bipolar feeling is actually a good thing and is only increased by the great acting of the lead actors. This second season was a great improvement in every single way, which has ensured a spot in this list.

The Good Place

The Good Place isn't the only series on this list that saw the involvement of Michael Schur, and for good reason. This final season managed to bring across the message even better, and all that without sacrificing an ounce of its funny humour. The final episode is, in my opinion, one of the best final episodes that has aired recently, which further proves its deserved spot on this list.

Modern Family

Modern Family is the only series that has been nominated since the beginning of our series of the year election for every year. For a series that has had eleven seasons in total, that is quite a feat. It shows how the series has managed to uphold a certain level of quality. Till the end, we were able to enjoy the clever writing, the talented actors and the amazing characters. It definitely deserves a spot on this list.

One Day at a Time (2017)

The fourth season of One Day at a Time (2017) has had terrible luck. They had to halt production while they were at the seventh episode. Nonetheless, the series has managed to acquire its first and last nomination this year. Despite its move to Pop, the magic of the series and the chemistry between the family remained intact. This season featured one of the best episodes of the entire series, which is in part the reason why it has been nominated, even with fewer episodes.

Sex Education

This year, Sex Education returned bolder and more confident than before. The series tries its best to find the humour aspect of puberty, at which it succeeds quite well. The serious moments are also dealt with in a great way. The actors manage to stay in character, of which Gillian Anderson and Emma Mackey are the highlights. As a big favourite of many, this series could not be left out of this list.

Upload

Science fiction and comedy are not often combined. This year, that was quite different. With Avenue 5 and Space Force, Upload proved to be the best choice. A surprisingly charming series manages to blend intriguing mystery with gooey drama. It may be one of the least funny series on this list but that doesn't mean it lacks humour. The full package deserves a spot.

What We Do in the Shadows

This year, What We Do in the Shadows released its second season. It was excellent. Pretty much in every single aspect, this season was an improvement over the first season and it also managed to increase its deliciously dry humour. The fantastic cast wasn't left out at all and they deserve a lot more recognition. As far as I'm concerned, this series is the best comedy series of the year and it has rightfully earned its spot. But we'll have to wait and see if other people agree.

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist is fundamentally different from the other series on this list, it is a jukebox musical. The way this series uses music can only be described as beautiful. Luckily, it is also written quite well and it is a prime example of a successful dramedy. The series has one of the funniest episodes of this year, which on its own is enough for me to give it a place on this list.

It is clear where people should go if they're looking for their favourite comedy series. Netflix and NBC lead the way with three series each. Before that, Netflix had quite a few other potential series that just about didn't make the top ten. All the networks and streaming services have put their best foot forward. All we can do now, is wait and see who will end up victorious.

These were all ten nominees, which has been based on information provided by the members, the writers and yours truly. Can't find your own favourite? You can always use a wildcard. Good luck voting.
