Series of the year 2020 - Best animated series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2020 and discusses the animated category. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 4th and Monday, February 1st.
The year 2020 has flown by! The year that has been known for the lockdowns and binge-watching is nearly over and that means we're going to take a look back at the best series. As a passionate animation fan, I was allowed to create this top ten last year.

And this year - now that animated series have become even more mainstream - I once again have been given the opportunity to nominate the ten best animated series of 2020. With even more available streaming services, there are also more animated series to watch. This year features a large variety of animated series.

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominated series for this category in alphabetical order:

Archer

Last year, Archer didn't manage to be nominated. This year, that is different. In the meanwhile, Archer has managed to reach its eleventh season. After season 9 and 10, Archer has returned to its original formula, which has managed to rejuvenate the series. The great mix of sarcasm, humour and endless pop culture references ensure Archer's nomination for best animated series of the year.

Blood of Zeus

A new series that has immediately managed to become a favourite. Even though the story isn't the best adaptation of Greek mythology, the animation is stylish and provides a solid amount of entertainment. The series provides a refreshing look at Greek mythology. A look that I haven't seen before. That is why Blood of Zeus has managed to acquire a spot in this list.

BoJack Horseman

Yep, Bojack Horseman is once again part of this list. The series was originally released in 2014 and managed to keep the world in its grasp till now. Once again, it's unrefined humour and Bojacks unique animation style ensured that the series was received well. The story is great and sometimes even feels more vivid than other live-action series. A pearl in the animated world and thus worthy of a nomination.

Castlevania

It took some time before we saw another season of Castlevania, but it was worth the wait. The series - which is based on the game with the same name - has managed to release another great season, packed with beautiful animation, powerful action scenes and solid character development. There are a lot of similarities to the new The Witcher series, but with the liberty of animation.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Castlevania.

Dorohedoro

The second anime on this list and definitely not the last. A gruesome and dark anime from Mappa, which is known for making Dororo. It is filled with humour and fantastic and unique animation. Dorohedoro has a lot of similarities to older animation styles and has managed to perfectly use its source material. Another Netflix anime that has managed to be picked for this list.

Great Pretender

The final anime on this year's list. Great Pretender is a new crime comedy produced by WIT Studio, which is known for Attack on Titan and The Ancient Magus' Bride. Great Pretender isn't your basic shonen anime. It has a great story and some of the best character development. Its bright colours and excellent visualisation combined with the fun story has ensured this anime's spot in this top ten list.

Harley Quinn

Last year, we missed Harley Quinn in the list of nominations. She's here now. The second half of the first season and the entirety of season two has resulted in a lot of praise from all over the world of animation. The style is packed with brutality and rudeness and is exactly what to expect from The Maiden of Mischief. Next to that, the animation style is of very high quality.

Rick and Morty

A good series requires a lot of patience. The same applies to Rick and Morty. Four seasons in seven years is not a whole lot. The story, however, of the crazy grandfather and the 'not too bright' grandson keeps ensuring that people return. Of course, the unusual characters, well-thought storylines and endless possibilities of animation and interdimensional travelling is also part of the reason why Rick and Morty is successful.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Rick and Morty.

Star Trek: Lower Decks

For me, this was a rather unknown series, but other writers and MySeries readers have said that this was one of the best. If that's the case, I'm not going to be difficult and make it part of the list. Star Trek: Lower Decks stands out due to the way it looks at Star Trek. It's not the serious series format that we're used to. This time, it's more of a comedy. The story is packed with Trekkie jokes and the modern animation is quite similar to that of Final Space. All in all, a good addition to the list.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The official final season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars has managed to properly finish one of the most successful (western) animated series. And what a season it was! Dave Filon has managed to bring the story of the seventh season to life with modern animation. At first, this 'children's series' managed to combine crazy moments with serious moments. Because of that, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is a beautiful expansion of the Star Wars universe and is definitely worthy of a nomination for this list.

These were all ten nominees, which has been based on information provided by the members, the writers and yours truly. Can't find your own favourite? You can always use a wildcard. Good luck voting.
