Series of the year 2020 - Best science fiction/fantasy series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2020 and discusses the sciencefiction/fantasy category. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 4th and Monday, February 1st.
Robots, time-travelling, demons, magic, aliens, otherworldly planets and Baby Yoda. Despite all the misery this year, we had enough to distract ourselves. Personally, I like this category because of the fact that you can totally immerse yourselves in a completely different reality. And, boy, didn't we need that, especially this year?

Below you'll find in alphabetical order, the ten nominees in this category. We compiled it from the votes in the monthly poll, the grades on MySeries and mixed that up with a bit of a personal touch. Keep reading, because I know you guys cannot wait!

Doctor Who

Thé series in which sci-fi and fantasy come together. Doctor Who is a series that lasts a long time already. It's in the top ten for a couple of years now. Can the Doctor finally take the trophy home, this year?
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Doctor Who.

His Dark Materials

This is a complete fanfest for the experienced sci-fi/fantasy fan. This magical, scientific, steampunk-esque series warms a lot of hearts. And with a spectacular cast plus the astonishing visuals, this is a serious contender for the grand prize!

Locke & Key

After years of development and multiple streamers, Locke & Key finally did find their home: Netflix. And not without success. The series, based on the books, isn't just renewed for a second, but also for a third season. Well, that sounds promising!
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Locke & Key.

The Mandalorian

There are not a lot of series - the last couple of years - who had such a massive (positive) response as The Mandalorian. The first season was a hit but the second seasons tops it. With a season finale with such bizarre twists and historical surprises, I for one wouldn't be the slightest surprised if we already knew the winner of this category.

Outlander

Honestly, this is the one series I haven't seen out of all the nominees. But my co-writers here at MySeries promise me that this is a blessing in disguise. Maybe it'll be the surprise of the season?

Raised By Wolves

Well, as a writer of these columns, you don't always have that much influence on the nominees. Maybe that's a good thing, otherwise, it would be my top ten, and now it is ours. But, having said that, I have to tell you something about this one. I also nominated this series...in the category Most Disappointing series. Can someone please explain to me what you liked about this series? Please leave it in the comments. Surprise me!

Star Trek: Picard

Sometimes it just works when you take a beloved character and pick the just as beloved actor, and put it together one more time. Well, that is exactly what happened with Star Trek: Picard. Isn't it lovely?
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Star Trek: Picard.

Supernatural

For fifteen years, the Winchester brothers battled it out against angels, demons, ghosts, leviathans, vampires and other monsters. Solely based on the facts that a non-soap-series can keep it going for fifteen years ánd still manages to expand its fan-base, this series deserves a spot in the top ten. Because after this year, we'll never hear the iconic sentence: 'Saving people, hunting things.'

Upload

Quite unexpected, Upload became an Amazon hit this year. This smart comedy knows how to subvert your expectations and be funny while doing it. And although it is a comedy, it still is a sci-fi
series as well!

Westworld

I feel like, with everything that happened this year, Westworld aired more than a year ago. But it really was 2020. Strangely enough, most of the people in my social bubble didn't like this season as much as I did. For me, it was the combination between the existential questions, the action and the baffling visuals that made me nominate this one.

Well, it's up to you now. Easier said than done...
