Series of the Year 2021 - Best Series of 2021

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2021 and focuses on the best series of this year. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday 5 January and Sunday 6 February.
Since 2016, it's been up to me to write the column that focuses on the best series of the year. This is once again the case this year. And I was surprised by many of the suggestions I was given by our readers and writers. Even though I thought some series would be guaranteed a nomination, nobody suggested them. Some of the series you'll find down below can also be found in other lists, which mean they could win multiple categories. All we can do is wait and see, maybe our voters will surprise us. Whether or not the results will surprise us, is something we'll know on the 11th of February.

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominees in this category:

Bosch

Bosch ended this year. The Amazon detective series premiered back in 2015 and had a total of seven seasons and 68 episodes. On MySeries, the series has been given an average rating of 8.1/10. Luckily for the fans, Bosch has been given a spin-off called Bosch: Legacy. That one is set to premiere on IMDb TV in 2022.

The Handmaid's Tale

This Hulu series has been nominated as well, and that is not strange at all. The dystopian drama manages to keep viewers interested for several years now. A fifth season of the series has already been ordered. On MySeries, the series has an average rating of 8.5/10. As it appears now, there will be more of The Handmaid's Tale on the horizon, even though there are some who think that five seasons is more than enough.

Line of Duty

In my opinion, Line of Duty is one of the best series I've ever seen. When going over the nominations and I noticed that two series were tied, it was easy for me to make a decision. The MySeries members have given this series an average rating of 8.4/10, and with that, it finds itself at the #73 spot in the Top 100. It isn't known whether or not there is going to be a seventh season, but it's not needed, considering the ending of the sixth season.

Mare of Easttown

Mare of Easttown is one of the big contenders to be series of the year. For only seven episodes, we were able to enjoy this wonderful HBO Max miniseries. A second season isn't likely but never say never. Even though the creators and Kate Winslet have said that the story of Mare has been told, there could be more to tell. Considering the big success of this series and everything.

Marvel's Loki

What more can be said about the God of Mischief. In Marvel's Loki, this 'bad guy' with a golden heart can show what he's good at, being bad with a sweet but sharp edge. Marvel's Loki is one of the best Marvel series, according to many. Slightly justified, this series has an average rating of 8.0/10 and a nomination for these awards.

Marvel's WandaVision

Opinions about Marvel's WandaVision are mixed. One person thinks it's amazing, the other thinks it's 'okay' and another thought it was pretty bad. Nonetheless, the Disney+ series has been nominated and was given an average rating of 7.9/10 on MySeries. But whether or not this superhero series poses a challenge to Marvel's Loki and/or Mare of Easttown is something we'll have to find out.

The Morning Show

In 2019, Apple TV+ released this drama series and it received loads of praise. Unfortunately, according to many, the second season was something that shouldn't have been made. Despite all that criticism, there were a lot of people who thought The Morning Show should still be nominated. This may be in part due to the solid first season. On average, the series was given an 8.1/10.

Sex Education

The British dramedy from Netflix has had three seasons so far. A fourth has already been announced. Sex Education has been given an average rating of 8.0/10 on MySeries. It has already won the series of the year election in the past. It isn't likely to win this year, but you never know. Stranger things have happened.

Squid Game

Personally, I don't think many will be surprised if this South Korean series ends up winning, even though there is a hefty amount of competition. Netflix' Squid Game has broken streaming service records and that could play a big role in this election. The average rating isn't that high, though. Only an 8.0/10. Luckily, a second season has been announced. That means that this series will probably be back next year.

Ted Lasso

It doesn't happen very often that a comedy ends up being nominated in this category. This year, it's up to Ted Lasso to represent the genre. The Apple TV+ series has seen two seasons so far, which resulted in an average rating of 7.9/10 on MySeries. Whether or not a comedy will become the best series will remain a surprise until the 11th of February.

These were all the ten nominees that have been chosen by you, the writers and myself. Want to choose a different series instead? You can always decide to use your wildcard. This list is the final list of nominations. Starting tomorrow, the 5th of January, the voting will begin. Good luck voting!

With kind choice-regards,

Mandy
