Series of the year 2021 - Best drama series

This column supports the 2021 Series of the Year Election and focuses on the 'drama category'. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday, January 5th and Sunday, February 6th.
This year it's up to me to go through the newest category: 'Best drama series'. This category will replace the 'Best binge-watch series'. When I started writing this column, I had no clue as to which series would be picked by the readers and writers, but I must say, it has become quite an interesting list.

Due to this category, it was a lot easier to nominate procedural series. And that is exactly what happened. The list down below has become a nice blend of different kinds of series that only have one thing in common, which is the category drama.

Down below, you'll find the top ten 'Best Drama' nominees of 2021 in alphabetical order:

Billions

The sixth season of this financial drama series will start in January 2022, but the fifth season was released over two parts in 2021. Back in 2020, Billions was nominated for the category 'Best series', but it didn't manage to win. Maybe this year, even though there are a lot of solid competitors in this category. The series has an 8.2 average grade on MySeries.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Billions.

The Good Doctor

This ABC medical drama series is currently on the 89th spot of our website's top 100. Back in 2017, The Good Doctor premiered. This is the first year where the series is nominated. Freddie Highmore portrays a young surgeon with Savant syndrome, which causes trouble from time to time. The fifth season is currently airing.

Grey's Anatomy

The 3rd spot to ur website's top 100 goes to Grey's Anatomy. This ABC medical drama series has reached its eighteenth season and has already been part of our elections. Back in 2016, it won the category 'Best Guilty Pleasure series'. Maybe, this year, the immensely popular medical series can win in this new category.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about Grey's Anatomy.

The Handmaid's Tale

Not a surprise that this dystopian drama series has been nominated, I think. The #10 from our top 100 cannot be left out of the Series of the Year elections. The Handmaid's Tale is based on the book with the same name by Margaret Atwood. It paints a rather bleak picture of the future of women. The Hulu series has already been renewed with its fifth season.

It's a Sin

It's a Sin is a British dramedy on Channel 4. The 5-episode miniseries aired in 2021 and was given an average grade of 8.6 by MySeries guests. The series follows friends in the decade when aids became more prominent. In 2021, It's a Sin was nominated for 22 awards and out of those, it won nine.

Mare of Easttown

The 2021 hit of the year, Mare of Easttown featured Kate Winslet and Jean Smart, amongst others. It is expected that this series will rank high in more categories than just this one. The 7-episode miniseries received a lot of well-deserved praise. On MySeries, the series has an 8.4 average grade. At the Emmy awards, Mare of Easttown won four Emmy's.

The Morning Show

Apple TV+'s The Morning Show received a lot of praise after its first season. Opinions were divided after the release of the second season. But that didn't stop the series from being nominated in this category. Back in 2019, the series premiered. The second season aired in October and November this year.

New Amsterdam (2018)

The third medical drama series on this list is New Amsterdam (2018) with Ryan Eggold in the lead. The procedural NBC series is inspired by true events and currently finds itself on the 93rd spot of the MySeries top 100. It is the first time since the start of New Amsterdam for it to be nominated in our elections. But whether or not it will beat its competitors is something we will have to find out.
Here, you can read the reviews that were written about New Amsterdam(2018).

This Is Us

This Is Us is the praised NBC drama series that finds itself on our #70 spot in our top 100. It is not the first time for the series to be nominated in these annual elections. But as far as I can tell, the series has never won a MySeries category. Whether or not it'll win this year, is something we'll find out eventually.

Virgin River

This romantic Netflix drama series has an average 8.1 grade on MySeries. Back in 2019, Virgin River premiered and this is the first time for the series to be nominated. It will probably not be the last time either. The series has already been renewed with its fourth and fifth season by Netflix.

These were the ten nominees, nominated by our readers, the editors and myself. If you want to choose another series you can use a wildcard. Good luck voting!

With kind choice-regards,

Mandy
