Series of the year 2021 - Best Ended series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2021 and discusses ended series. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday 5 January and Sunday 6 February.
It's once again time to say goodbye to some beloved series. Some of them have been given the perfect ending they deserved, others are unjustly cancelled, but some, some shows live long enough to become a figment of what they once were. I think that some of the nominated series could be part of that last group, depending on who you ask. But we all have different tastes, and what one person likes is disliked by others.

Sometimes, the ending isn't definitive. Some series on this list will have spin-offs and crossovers. Sometimes, a show will be saved by another network. A show that could've ended up on this list, but didn't, is Manifest, which was saved by Netflix. Multiple nominees of this year were also saved by a streaming service or network. But these too have ended. Which ones am I talking about?

Down below, you'll find the top ten nominees of 2021 in alphabetical order:

Atypical

What's it like to grow up as an autistic person and deal with the world around you? The 18-year-old autistic Sam and his family are followed as Sam is trying to get into a relationship and go to college. Atypical didn't show an overly dramatic or terrifying image of autism. Instead of that, it was often light, funny and adorable. But despite the uncomfortable humour, the series also managed to be serious about the impact it all has. After four years of good and bad things, the adventure of Sam and his family appears to be over. And they were given an ending they deserved.

Bosch

Bosch? No, not the washing machine brand. Bosch was one of the first series to be made by Amazon. We follow the detective Harry Bosch - who works for the LAPD - and see how he solves all kinds of murders. For seven seasons, Titus Welliver has portrayed the stubborn detective with visible delight. Throughout the years, the cast was expanded and storylines were great. Is Harry Bosch's story over? No. IMDb TV has announced a spin-off, which means that we'll be able to enjoy Titus Welliver in Bosch: Legacy.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine

The most fun police officers of New York came back for one more season. In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, murders, thefts and drugs were alternated with the most stupid office jokes. And sometimes, they even managed to discuss more serious themes such as sexual harassment and racism. And that combination made the series irresistible. The eighth season showed us one last time what made this series great. And because of that, this show has managed to end on a high note.

La Casa de Papel

La casa de Papel was a world phenomenon. For a long time, this was the most popular international series on Netflix. And for a good reason. La Casa de Papel meant spectacle with a capital S. The series isn't always that credible, and it can be a bit over the top. But is that bad? Not really. Viewers have embraced the Spanish bank robbers, the red jumpsuits, the Dali-masks and the codenames. And after three - or five, depending on how you count - seasons, it has been a good run. Bella Ciao!

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Who remembers the comedy series from the 90s? The one about the happy teenage witch who shared a house with her two aunts and a talking cat? Netflix returned Sabrina to the small screen, but now she was creepy, dark and mysterious. Perfect food for thought during the dark months. Although her return was met with much applause, it was only a short run. After 36 episodes divided over two seasons, it was over for the new Sabrina series. Her story isn't over just yet, as the young witch recently appeared in Riverdale.

Lucifer

How sexy can the devil be? Quite sexy. This was proven by Tom Ellis. For six seasons, he portrayed the immortal king of Hell who ran a nightclub in Los Angeles. And the series itself almost appeared to be just as immortal. The series was cancelled multiple times. But every single time, the show somehow found a way to survive. Eventually, the fire ran out after six seasons. And fans can look back at a wonderful time with their favourite devil.

Pose

In the 80s, ballroom culture became a thing in the US. It meant extravagant outfits and music, a combination of cultures and ethnicities and a lively place in the gay community. Pose tells the story of the people involved in this culture in the typical Ryan Murphy style. Pose was extravagant, but at the same time incredibly vulnerable and intimate. With beautiful themes and wonderful characters from Billy Porter, MJ Rodriguez and Indiya Moore, Pose managed to create an unforgettable experience for the viewers.

Shameless (US)

Whoever says that all remakes are doomed to fail has never watched Shameless (US). Even though this was based on a British idea, the creators managed to give this series its own identity. For eleven seasons, we were able to enjoy the life of single father Frank Gallagher and his six children. The things he and his children did are often terrible, but also incredibly funny. Unfortunately, this series also had to end. After so many seasons, we can look back on a successful remake.

Superstore

Workplaces are excellent spots for comedy series. Throughout the years, we've seen offices, precincts, city halls and bars. Superstore had a new concept, a superstore. We follow the employees of a massive store. Although the series had a bit of a rough start, it became better and acquired a loyal group of fans. After six seasons, this group of fans have to say goodbye to their series.

Vikings

Throughout the years, lots of series have tried to become 'the new' Game of Thrones. Nobody has managed to claim that title, but some series get quite close. One of those series is Vikings. In this series, the legendary Viking king Ragnar and his sons go to all the corners of the world to find power, glory and wealth. The power of the Vikings grew each season. Each season became bigger, more epic and crueler than the previous one. Nonetheless, it made sense to end the series after six seasons. The story was told. But for those who couldn't get enough of the Viking violence, you'll be able to look forward to the spin-off Vikings: Valhalla.
