Series of the Year 2021 - Best Actor

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2021 and discusses the best actors. You can vote for your favourite series in this genre and others, between Wednesday 5 January and Sunday 6 February.
2021 was another insanely good year to enjoy a large amount of series. These featured a variety of actors who put down an amazing portrayal of certain characters. In some cases, a series was loved purely because of whoever portrayed the lead character. This year, the list of nominees is rather diverse and international. It is clear that the MySeries readers are interested in pretty much everything.

The nominees for best actor were chosen based on input from various sources. Firstly, all MySeries readers had a lot of influence on this selection. Next to that, my colleagues from the writing team have also provided their nominees. I personally support all the choices from the readers and my colleagues. I have, however, selected my own wildcard actor as I truly believe that my chosen actor should be eligible for the award of 'best actor on television in 2021'!

Down below, you'll find the top five best actor nominees of 2021 in alphabetical order:

Andy Samberg (Brooklyn Nine-Nine)

For the past eight years, Andy Samberg blew us away as Jake Peralta in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the better comedies of the last couple of years. Unfortunately, the final episode of the series aired on the 18th of September in 2021. Considering Andy has consequently portrayed a hilarious character, his nomination for best actor is more than justified.

Omar Sy (Lupin)

Omar Sy has managed to fascinate a huge amount of viewers with his performance in Lupin. The second part has been watched by more than 54 million households. His portrayal of the 'gentlemen thief' Assane Diop definitely contributed to the series' success. It appears that fans will get to enjoy more of Omar Sy in this role. A third part has already entered production.

Titus Welliver (Bosch)

For over seven seasons, Titus Welliver portrayed detective Harry Bosch in Bosch. The series was one of the first Amazon productions. Each season received positive reception. If you use Rotten Tomatoes as a measurement of how good this series was, then it was pretty darn good. Seasons two until and including season seven have all received a 100% appreciation score. Even though this series has ended, we'll see a return of Titus Welliver as Detective Harry Bosch in Bosch: Legacy.

Tom Ellis (Lucifer)

This year was the final year where Tom Ellis was able to portray Lucifer in the Lucifer series. I haven't even seen this series myself, but the readers of this website have unanimously agreed that Tom Ellis should be part of this list. Maybe I should try this series myself. I will have plenty of hours of material to go through.

Tom Hiddleston (Marvel's Loki)

The last one of this top 5, but definitely not the least. Tom Hiddleston as Loki. He too has been unanimously selected by the MySeries readers and my fellow colleagues. Ever since Tom Hiddleston made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he has become a fan-favourite of most Marvel fans. When the series Marvel's Loki was announced, it was pretty much a guarantee he would end up here. Tom Hiddleston manages to bring humour, charm but also many other emotions in a convincing manner. I think that Tom Hiddleston is a realistic victor in this category.

Writer's Choice
As it's not possible to use a wildcard in this category, we were allowed to nominate our own wildcard.

Billy Crudup (The Morning Show)

Due to the portrayal of the character Cory Ellison from The Morning Show, I've decided to nominate Billy Crudup in this category. Even though I've used my wildcard to do so, I think his presence here is justified. Billy Crupud manages to make you really get into a series with his dialogues. He manages to bring his texts with so much conviction and passion, it immediately makes you interested. For the first season of The Morning show, Billy won an Emmy award. Maybe he'll win this prestigious award once more this year.

The list of nominees is quite diverse. We've got international actors and all different kinds of genres. This emphasizes the broad interest of the MySeries readers. I can't wait to see if you all agree with this definitive list of nominees. Good luck voting!
