Series of the year 2022 - Best drama series

This column supports the 2021 Series of the Year Election and focuses on the 'drama category'. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 2nd and Sunday, February 5th.
Last year, this category was newly introduced. So that means, that this will be the second time we get to vote on what we think is the best drama series. The reader/watcher is always right. That also applies to the Series of the Year awards. Once again, loads of votes have come in through the MySeries monthly poll. Alongside the writer's picks and forum voters, this is the compiled top 10 nominees.

Ten series, of which I have seen six. The choices in this list are quite diverse. From historical to medical, to dystopian, to contemporary drama - everything's here. Even a Dutch drama series has entered the top 10. I can't wait to see which one will eventually win this year.

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for best drama series from 2022;

Bridgerton

Bridgerton
The second season of the British Netflix series Bridgerton premiered in March this year. And even though the first season received critical acclaim, the second season saw a lot more criticism instead. As a result of that, I was actually quite surprised to see that there had been enough votes to warrant a spot in our beautiful top 10 of this year.

The Crown

The Crown
Completely justified, this fictional historical drama series has entered this list. The fifth season of The Crown premiered on Netflix in November, it acquired a lot of votes through the poll. There was quite a bit of criticism regarding the liberty taken with historical accuracy, but in my opinion, this is a fictional series with historical facts. Nobody who lives outside the palace walls knows what happened within, but the creators have turned it into a beautiful tale and the actors manage to portray their characters in a credible manner. This series is currently #77 in the all-time MySeries top 100.

Euphoria

Euphoria
The HBO series Euphoria received a lot of praise. This year, Zendaya even won an Emmy for her portrayal of Rue Bennett. In January of this year, the second season premiered. And even though that has been some time ago, the fans haven't forgotten this one. In the nomination poll for actresses, the lead actress reached #2. Because of that, the expectations for this drama series are rather high this year.

Grey's Anatomy

Grey's Anatomy
Last year, this medical drama series came in second place. The long-running procedural ABC drama is currently in its nineteenth season, and the end is not yet in sight. As long as lead actress Ellen Pompeo will remain active for Grey's Anatomy, it is likely the series will have more seasons. On that note, Ellen Pompeo will no longer have a lead role in the coming season(s) of Grey's Anatomy, she will, however, remain available for guest portrayals from time to time. This series currently is #4 in the all-time MySeries top 100.

The Handmaid's Tale

The Handmaid's Tale
In 2021, this series won three categories of the Series of the Year awards; best actress, best drama, and best series of 2021. Will The Handmaid's Tale, featuring Elisabeth Moss, receive just as much praise this year? The dystopian Hulu series doesn't just speak to the imagination but is sometimes awfully close to reality. Not a strange thing that we see this series on this nomination list. This series currently is #10 in the all-time MySeries top 100.

Het jaar van Fortuyn

Het jaar van Fortuyn
The only Dutch series in this list; Het jaar van Fortuyn (translation: The year of Fortuyn). The AVROTROS mini-series focuses on the final year of the charismatic politician Pim Fortuyn, who was murdered by animal rights activist Volkert van der Graaf for unclear reasons. Real footage makes the series much more authentic. The actor has also taken a good look at Pim as he shows us a strong performance as Pim.

The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer
The third Netflix series on this list is The Lincoln Lawyer. The legal drama series has a connection with another series, Mickey Haller is - apparently - the halfbrother of Bosch. The series is based on the books by Michael Connelly. And that on its own is usually enough to provide a good story with interesting characters. Justifiable as to why this series has ended up on this list.

Outlander

Outlander
This Starz drama series has been nominated a number of times, but it has never gotten past an honorable third place. Maybe this is the year when Outlander will reach a higher spot. The series is officially classified as a historic fantasy series, but the only fantasy element is the time-traveling. Drama sets the stage, which is why it ended up in this category. And justifiably so. This series currently is #13 in the all-time MySeries top 100.

Vikings: Valhalla

Vikings: Valhalla
The incredibly popular series Vikings received a spin-off; Vikings: Valhalla. No Ragnar, but other Vikings who are happy to head off onto an adventure. They don't scare easily and aren't afraid to be in a fight. Plenty of stories to create a nice prequel consisting of multiple seasons. The Netflix season hasn't reached the same level of popularity as its illustrious predecessor, but give it some time and I'm sure we will see a lot more of this series.

Virgin River

Virgin River
Virgin River is a romantic drama series that belongs to Netflix. Last July, the fourth season was released and that was pretty good. The series has many loyal fans, whose numbers are increasing as there are more good seasons and good reviews. Because of that, it is entirely logical that the series has once again made this list. The question is whether or not the series will rise above the fifth spot it reached last year, considering all the other great series that have been nominated.

Ten drama series that have a little bit of everything needed to win. Will the prize once again go to The Handmaid's Tale, or will Outlander beat them all this year? In February, we'll find out which drama series can refer to itself as The best drama series of 2022.

These were all ten nominees that were chosen by you, the writers, and myself. Want to choose something else? You can use a wildcard instead. Good luck voting!

With kind Awards regards,

Mandy
