Series of the Year 2022 - Best crime series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2022 and focuses on the best crime series of the year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 2, and Sunday 5 February.
Again, there was a lot of murder, stealing, extortion, drug dealing, and more on television this year. The crime genre is still very much present on television. With some nominees, it is clear as to why they've been nominated. On one side of the law are police officers, detectives, and criminal lawyers and on the other side are criminals with a lot of... experience.

But with a number of series, it is not so clear who is the hero or the villain. Sometimes you just hope that the killer will outsmart the law. Or you're not sure whether to hate that unreliable lawyer or not. And if you, as a series creator, know how to put a beautiful product around it, then your series deserves to be nominated in this category.

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for best crime series from 2022;

Better Call Saul

Better Call Saul
Creating a spin-off to one of the best series ever made. Crazy, right? Do not touch! Well, no. Better Call Saul turned out to be absolutely incredibly. This series shows how the stumbling lawyer Jimmy McGill slowly ends up on a darker path and eventually transforms into the ruthless Saul Goodman. And now that the finale has aired, some people find it even better than Breaking Bad. Rightfully so? I'll leave that up to you.

Bosch: Legacy

Bosch: Legacy
Last year we said goodbye to the Bosch series. But protagonist Titus Welliver had not yet closed the door of the police station or a spin-off was already being planned. This time Harry Bosch is working as a private detective, while his daughter takes her first steps as a police officer. Although the series has been given a new look, Bosch: Legacy still feels like the old, trusted Bosch we've known for years.

The Capture

The Capture
Personally, I was not very impressed with the first season of The Capture. It had nice ideas, but just didn't do enough with them. The second season literally blew me away. The combination of corrupt governments and facial recognition technology is already a recipe for a good series. Add to that an exciting story and a couple of top actors and you have a gem. Let's just hope for a third season.

Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story
One of the most controversial series on the list is based on a true story. Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer made countless victims in the 1970s and 1980s. Relatives found the series disrespectful towards their lost loved ones. Still, it can be said that Evan Peters is an excellent actor and that he has made the series very popular. Netflix has already announced that it will film the lives of even more serial killers under the title Monster.

Dexter: New Blood

Dexter: New Blood
After nearly a decade of absence, everyone's favorite fictional serial killer Dexter Morgan was suddenly back on our screens. The best man has aged a bit and has traded sunny Miami for snowy Iron Lake, but everything that made the original series so good is here again: the murders, Dexter's internal struggles, and the oppressive cat-and-mouse game with the authorities. Dexter: New Blood is such a revival that shows that a comeback is sometimes a good idea.

The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer
Like Bosch, The Lincoln Lawyer is based on a book series by Michael Connelly. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo plays the downcast lawyer Mickey Haller who works from his car. When a colleague is murdered and he takes on a new case, he sees this as an opportunity to move up the ranks. The Lincoln Lawyer is an amusing and smooth series that looks good and does exactly what it was made for: to provide entertainment. It makes perfect sense that Netflix has therefore announced a second season.

Ozark

Ozark
Ozark is crime at its darkest. When financial advisor Marty Byrde and his family go on the run from a drug cartel, they find themselves in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. But even there they are not safe. The process of how an ordinary family slowly descends into the criminal world, the quirky atmosphere, and the acting performances of Jason Bateman and Laura Linney make this a strong contender.

Peaky Blinders

Peaky Blinders
Ever since 2013, the Peaky Blinders have been an integral part of our screens. Once every few years, the Shelby family resurfaces to make the world unsafe from their home base in Birmingham. Also in the sixth and final season, everything is of a high level with the acting and the atmosphere at the forefront. Everything that did well in the previous seasons did well this season. Although this is the last season, there will be one more movie where we get to enjoy the Shelby family one more time

Reacher

Reacher
You need a big muscular fighting machine and who do you ask? Tom Cruise? That doesn't seem like a good idea to me. That's what they thought at Prime Video too. So they decided to cast Alan Ritchson as Jack Reacher. The first season is an excellent film adaptation of one of the many books Lee Child has written about a war veteran with an allergy to injustice. A second season has already been announced and like many here I hope we get to enjoy many more Reacher stories on screen.

The Responder

The Responder
Don't expect wild chases, epic shootings, or thrilling manhunts here. The Responder is slow, but offers a raw and honest drama about a policeman who is dealing with just too much. Martin Freeman is in top form as Liverpool police officer Chris Carson, who is shattered by the many night shifts. He is in a knot with himself, sees no way out, and makes wrong choices. The Responder is slow and not always exciting, but very intense and very well acted.
