Series of the year 2022 - Best science fiction/fantasy series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2022 and focuses on the best Science fiction/fantasy series of the year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 2, and Sunday 5 February.
The last few years have been a real delight for fans of fantasy and science fiction. Lots of new series have come out, some better than others. Below is a list of only ten nominees, despite the large selection. With the help of my fellow writers and you, the readers, I have managed to make a selection again. A good mix of fantasy and science fiction has come out, with many different sub-genres. So something for everyone!

Below, in alphabetical order, are the top ten nominees for best science fiction/fantasy series from 2022;

House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon
We live in an age of sequels, prequels, and reboots. It wasn't long before the Targaryen prequel to the hit series Game of Thrones was announced. I don't think it's a surprise that House of the Dragon makes its way onto this list, despite the divided opinion. I acknowledge the criticisms, but I am generally very satisfied with the series. I can't wait to see how this will develop in the coming years.

Locke & Key

Locke & Key
This is the last year that this fantasy series will show its face in this list. The final season of Locke & Key aired in August. Who knows, the last breath of the Locke family may result in a first prize for the series.

The Peripheral

The Peripheral
When it turned out that the creators of Westworld would have a say in this new series, I immediately became enthusiastic. I am certainly not disappointed. The Peripheral is a wonderful science fiction series with technology that allows you to travel through time, see some kind of robots, and a lot of violence. A beautiful role for Chloƫ Grace Moretz.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Another prequel to a hugely popular franchise. Amazon announced a few years ago that they were working on a series in Tolkien's universe. This year, finally The Rings of Power, a prequel to The Lord of the Rings arrived. As with House of the Dragon, there are both negative and positive reviews. We'll let you make the decision.

The Sandman

The Sandman
Not only HBO and Amazon do their part when it comes to great fantasy series. Netflix came out with The Sandman this year, based on Neil Gaiman's graphic books. An episodic series about gods, serial killers, mythology and more. It sounds like every fantasy element you can think of has been crammed into this series. In a way it is, but it works!

See

See
See is another series that is participating for the last time this year. The final season of Apple TV+'s sci-fi series aired this year, bringing a happy ending to this original series. I will forever miss Sylvia Hoeks as Queen Kane.

Stranger Things

Stranger Things
You can't have missed it. Another season of Stranger Things aired this year. The gap between seasons 3 and 4 was long, about three years. However, that has not diminished its popularity. Just ask Kate Bush! Despite the craze, the fourth season of Stranger Things was also simply very good. Also interesting how Netflix split the season into two parts for the first time, something they will do more often.

Wednesday

Wednesday
This fantasy comedy about Wednesday, the daughter in the Addams family, was just in time. You can think: can't we even come up with something new? Another reboot/sequel/spinoff. I can't blame you there, but that doesn't take away from the fact that this is a wonderful series. Jenna Ortega does a great job as Wednesday Addams. A wonderful, light-hearted fantasy series where the gears in your head don't have to work overtime all the time.

Westworld

Westworld
With pain in my heart, Westworld also had to accept the whirlwind that is blowing at HBO / Warner Bros. Westworld remains, in my opinion, some of the most intriguing and interesting television of recent years. It remains a shame that we will never see the fifth and final chapter, despite the fact that the fourth season can certainly also be seen as the end. So you haven't watched Westworld yet and are worried about a cliffhanger at the end of season four? Just watch. A fifth season would have been a perfect ending, it's just good now.

The Witcher

The Witcher
Another series where the troubles are running high lately. The second season of The Witcher aired on Netflix late last year. We are all anxiously awaiting not only the third season, but the prequel series that will be released soon (or has just been released?). Meanwhile, it has also been announced that Henry Cavill, our Witcher, will be replaced in season four! I'm curious how this will develop.
