Good tunes: Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine

Good tunes: Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine

Television series mainly focus on the visual aspect, but what seems to be increasingly important is the soundtrack. The choice of music in a series can make or break a scene.
This edition of Good tunes has been on my to-be-written list for quite some time. I've been waiting for the start of the third season since the second season of The Morning Show to have a good starting point for this column. I want to talk about the intro of this Apple TV+ series. Since I heard the intro of this drama series, this artist has been an indispensable part of my playlist. Season 3 of The Morning Show will start on September 13 and therefore now I want to highlight Nemesis by Benjamin Clementine.

At Least for Now is the debut studio album featuring the song Nemesis by English musician, singer and poet Benjamin Clementine. It was released on January 12, 2015. The album was recorded after Clementine received critical acclaim with his two previous EPs. The album won the 2015 Mercury Music Prize. The album was also well-received by music critics, who praised its mix of genres and uniqueness.

If I held my breath on you
I would have died a thousand times
And if chewing was to show you how much I cared
I'd probably be wearing dentures by now

Said if I held my breath on you
I would have died a thousand times
And if chewing was to show you how much I cared
I'd probably be wearing dentures by now

Our promises broken
Nemesis is our token
You turn around
March on to your new home, home

Wherever you're goin' darling
Please don't you ever forget
To treat others the way you want to be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered

Just march on
March on
March on

If you held your breath on me
You would've died a million times
And if chewing was to show me how much you cared
You'd probably have swallowed your tongue by now

All I'm trying to say darling
Is that you know very well that I left her for you
I guess you're doing the same old, same thing to me now

Now these days
Hennessey dries my veins
As our genesis smiles back at me
Now heresey might be your new fate, faith
Whatever you've chosen to believe in darling
Don't you ever forget

To treat others the way you want to be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered
Treat others the way you want to be treated
Remember your days are fully numbered

Can't say anything for you no more
Nemesis is on the case, darling
Next time treat others the way you want to be treated
Otherwise
You'll get your punishment
And life ain't a bitch

Nemesis is
Nemesis is
Nemesis is
Nemesis is, is the mother of karma
karma
(Remember) karma
(Remember) karma
Remember, remember, remember

So long you run

Nemesis tells the story of a man who left his wife for another and now the other does the same to him. The man sees it as karma and a lesson learned - treat others as you would like to be treated. The song is now used as an intro song for The Morning Show and with success. He is making his US debut with a new EP called I Dream, I Smile, I Walk, I Cry. Nemesis is the opening.

Benjamin Clementine was born on December 7, 1988. He grew up in North London. His unique piano playing and charisma are especially appreciated. In addition, he has a hell of a voice that is also compared to that of Nina Simone and Antony Hegarty. "I had a bit of a crisis trying to figure out what I had done wrong in my past," Clementine shared. "In the end, the only thought I could think of at the time was the cliche phrase of treating others the way you want to be treated yourself. I wanted a good feel for this song and I deliberately named it Nemesis for the obvious reasons in Greek mythology." (Nemesis is the spirit of divine retribution).
