Series of the Year 2023 - Most Disappointing Series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2023 and focuses on the most disappointing series of the year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 2, and Sunday 4 February.
This is always one of the most fun nomination lists to look at. MySeries readers found the past year very unpleasant. Not many surprises this year. What is remarkable is the fact that only two or three of the list below also made it to another list this year. Usually, a number of nominees from the list of best series also manage to make it to the most disappointing list.

Below, in alphabetical order, the top ten nominees for the most disappointing series of 2023;

Arcadia

Arcadia
A Flemish-Dutch collaboration for an unpublished series of our own making. No expense was spared to turn this futuristic epic into a hit that could stand the test of time internationally. The start of the series was not easy and today everyone can immediately express their opinion through the many media channels. It will not sound strange to anyone that the controversy is mainly about budget versus quality. Many apparently dropped out, but many people continued to sit through Arcadia.

Citadel

Citadel
The global spy agency Citadel has fallen and its agents' memories have been erased. Now the powerful syndicate, Manticore, rises from the void. Can the Citadel agents remember their past and muster the strength to fight back?
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Citadel.

Platonic

Platonic
A pair of former best friends who met in childhood reconnect as adults and try to mend the rift that led to their falling out. As their friendship deepens, it destabilizes their lives and causes them to reevaluate their choices.
Unfortunately, no reviews have been written about Platonic as of yet

Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion
An adept of the Marvel universe should not be missing in this section. The lucky one this year is Secret Invasion, an American superhero series that hoped to score with a top cast including Samuel L. Jackson and Emilia Clarke. Not everyone liked Nick Fury's (Jackson) first leading role. Or perhaps the expectations of series like this are too high among fans of the genre.

Sex Education

Sex Education
Otis Thompson, a socially awkward high school virgin lives with his sex therapist mother. He teams up with the quick-witted 'bad-girl' Maeve to set up a clinic to deal with the weird and wonderful problems of their fellow students. In the fourth season, the cast spreads out over various schools, which gives the viewer a completely different feeling. Perhaps it is a good thing that Sex Education has closed its doors.

The Idol

The Idol
A fallen singer who is working on her comeback and is put under pressure by her entourage. The lady is not averse to drugs and sex and then bumps into a fool who leads a kind of sect with kindred artistic souls. Her entire entourage is shocked and wants nothing more than to pull her away from the man's influence. The first episode rocked the community. Explicit sex peppered the entire episode and resulted in many disapproving looks and reviews and an (in my opinion, undeserved) place in this section.

The Rig

The Rig
The Rig shows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo oil rig, stationed off the Scottish coast in the dangerous waters of the North Sea. When they are picked up to return to the mainland, a mysterious and all-encompassing fog appears. The oil rig is hit by heavy tremors and they are cut off from all communication with the outside world. As the crew tries to discover what drives this unknown force, a major accident forces them to ask questions about who they can really trust. The crew of the Bravo is pushed to their limits in a confrontation with forces beyond their imagination.
Unfortunately, no reviews have been written about The Rig as of yet

The Witcher

The Witcher
Based on the best-selling fantasy book series; The Witcher. Geralt of Rivia, a lonely monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where humans often prove to behave like depraved beasts. But when fate pushes him toward a powerful sorceress and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the continent's increasing instability together. This third season marks the end for actor Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. Apparently, that caused a lot of disappointed fans and The Witcher ended up in this list that no one actually wants to be on.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan
The Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series is not directly based on a specific book, but focuses on contemporary geopolitics and terrorist threats. As a CIA analyst, Jack Ryan comes across a number of suspicious cases and tries to solve them.

Willow

Willow
Decades after the events of the original "Willow" film, this series introduces all-new characters into the enchanted realm of fairy queens and two-headed Eborsisk monsters. Of course, Willow Ulfgood is not missing in this fantasy series.

These were all the ten nominees that have been chosen by you, the writers and myself. Want to choose a different series instead? You can always decide to use your wildcard. Good luck voting!

Oh dear. Arcadia was bad but I was still able to watch it. But Willow. Hell, halfway through episode 2 I was completely done with it

For me, The Idol is the most disappointing series of 2023.

I actually really liked Willow and the last season of Sex Education. My vote goes to The Gallows Pole. That could have been a very good series, but it didn't work out as far as I'm concerned.

I really think Citadel - and mainly because of the price tag. About 300 million for 6 episodes brings a lot of expectations. I certainly agree with the other series listed here, but I didn't have high expectations for them - so it's not that disappointing.

I'm going for The Idol. Was expecting the level of Euphoria, but it certainly wasn't!

I'm going for The Witcher this time. It's scandalous how they handled Henry Cavill and his character.

I didn't think Arcadia and certainly The Rig were that bad at all. And that The Witcher is in it because Cavill will no longer participate in NEXT season? I do not understand that. Then I would have expected the series to be in this category next year. Not now. This last Cavill season wasn't that bad. I have not seen the other series and therefore have no opinion about them. . What I really didn't like at all, after the series had been praised to the skies, was The Bear. I hated the 1.5 episodes I sat through. Based on all the reactions, I expected a lot more.

Almost the entire list actually consists of series that don't really deserve to "win" this category, but if I had to choose, it would be The Witcher. Not only because of Henry Cavill but also because of too much focus on other characters and not following source material + the disappointing ending. The fact that The Idol, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and Citadel are among them is also not correct in my opinion. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan was simply very good and The Idol and Citadel looked great.

Then in the case of The Witcher I'm probably lucky that I don't know the game or the books. Sometimes this is quite useful because you can simply enjoy what is shown on the screen. For example, the fact that I know the Foundation books very well means that I really cannot watch that series. While it is quite beautiful SF.

I expected a lot more from The Rig, so that was a slight disappointment. It has been renewed for a second season, to my surprise. The Idol was just a very bad series, there would have been so much more to it if they hadn't suddenly changed things drastically. I thought Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan was okay, but quickly forgotten. Citadel wasn't good either, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. He binged it straight away. I haven't seen the rest (yet). So The Rig...or a wildcard for Fatal Attraction. It was just so incredibly boringiii, I couldn't get through it (I finally did, so pat myself on the back, haha).
