Series of the Year 2024 - Best science fiction series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2024 and focuses on the best science fiction series of this year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 6, and Sunday February 10. A number of fun science fiction series were also released in 2024. Some based on a book, others originated in a video game. But all ideal for a nice escape from everyday reality.

Below, in alphabetical order, the top ten nominees of the best series from 2024;

3 Body Problem

The Chinese Cultural Revolution, contact with aliens and a group of scientists who are each confronted in their own way by strange events. All ingredients of 3 Body Problem. A wonderfully exciting series, with excellent acting and of which we will fortunately get more seasons.

Dark Matter (2024)

The theory that more than one universe exists is a popular topic in science fiction. This is also the case in Dark Matter (2024), in which physicist Jason Dessen is ambushed and kidnapped by Jason Dessen from another universe. Can he find his way back to his family? And if so, how can he outsmart himself? Excellent sci-fi series with plenty of opportunity for Joel Edgerton to shine.

Doctor Who

Doctor Who returned in 2024. And not only with Ncuti Gatwa as the new reincarnation of this legendary Timelord, but Doctor Who was also brought to us for the first time by Disney. It brought us a varied season in which episodes with a high cuddly and musical quality alternated with darker episodes in which the necessary depth was sought. We can't wait to see where else this Doctor will take us.

Dune: Prophecy

Dune: Prophecy takes us into the history of the Dune universe and focuses on the Bene Gesserit. It is clearly visible that a considerable budget has been used, it all looks beautiful and beautifully finished and in terms of atmosphere it fits in with the line set by the films.

Fallout

Fallout is based on the well-known video game and a title that was highly anticipated by many. And it certainly didn't disappoint. In this story about the consequences of a nuclear apocalypse, beautiful images are combined with well-connected storylines, humor and excellent acting. In any case, I can't wait for the second season to arrive.

Halo

After Fallout, Halo is the second title based on a well-known video game. In the final season of Halo we see what happens next for Master Chief Spartan. A season full of action that also looked visually beautiful.

Silo

Silo was one of the surprises of 2023 for me. A dystopian tour de force based on a book I didn't know yet. The second season ensures that the world in which Silo takes place can be further explored. The veil is being lifted more and more and we are finding out what is actually going on. Tension everywhere with excellent acting.

Snowpiercer

Four years after the series started, Snowpiercer's journey came to an end with the fourth season. The actors now know their roles inside and out and the mutual relationships provide the necessary depth to the story, just like the ethical issues that the series repeatedly presents to us. The fourth season offered us a worthy ending to this series.

Supacell

Every time I fear that I am done with superhero series, series like Supacell come out that rekindle my love for them. More real and raw than many other superhero series, we see the struggle in the less luxurious neighborhoods of London and the necessary social problems are exposed against the background of a group of people who appear to possess supernatural gifts.

The Boys

Is there anything else we can say about The Boys that hasn't already been said? Not much I suspect. The series continues to maintain a high level in the fourth season. Gross, lots of action, lots of humor and with excellent actors/actresses who seem to thoroughly enjoy their roles.
