Series of the Year 2024 - Most disappointing series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2024 and focuses on the most disappointing series of this year. You can cast a vote in this category and others, between Monday, January 6, and Sunday February 10.
Series that you have been looking forward to for months or years. Films that have been translated to the small screen and that you have been very curious about. Series that you have been following for many seasons and that you are very fond of. They come in all shapes and sizes. They have one thing in common: expectations are high. Very high. And sometimes too high.

Such a series may end up in this category, that of the most disappointing series of the year. And then 2024 has turned out to be a very nice series year, because even with input from the visitors of MySeries, the reviewers and column writers, it has been a job to draw up a clear list of contenders for this dubious title.

Below, in alphabetical order, the top ten nominees of the best series from 2024;

The Acolyte

The Acolyte
Star Wars spin-off The Acolyte was one that fans who are not yet tired of Disney's exploitation behavior were eagerly awaiting. A series that another group of fans viewed with healthy skepticism. A series that had to add another dimension to the Star Wars universe. Unfortunately, this appears to have been only moderately successful and it is not without reason that The Mouse House canceled The Acolyte after one season.

De Ring

De Ring
This year the Dutch series De Ring was released by the makers of Klem. The crime series starts with Anna who - by stealing a ring - ends up in a world full of blackmail and extortion. She does everything she can to keep her opponent Simon away, but he doesn't know how to stop either. The Ring was received with mixed comments and may not be the top favorite for this category. However, not everything that comes from home soil is equally good, and so De Ring has to settle for the dubious honor of being in this top ten.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about De Ring.

Dertigers

Dertigers (NL)
Another series from Dutch soil. This time it is about Dertigers (NL), a series that many have enjoyed watching for seasons. However, the fifth season, which aired in the summer of 2024, was received much less positively than its predecessors. And that is also the reason that Dertigers is not among the top this time, but perhaps among the flop of the year.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Dertigers.

Expats

Expats
A series with Nicole Kidman, on Prime Video. Then you know one thing for sure: there is enough budget. Still, just a bag of money doesn't make a good series. And this is also evident when we look at the reception of the first season of Expats. Whether Nicole 'Margaret' Kidman's skyscraper in Hong Kong will ever be completed remains to be seen. We will know soon which floor Expats ends up on in the Most Disappointing Series category. What will your choice be?

House of the Dragon

House of the Dragon
What else should we say about House of the Dragon? It is a spin-off for which you need to have the necessary prior knowledge. It's a slow series. He does look beautiful. But what do we really think about it? You hate it or you love it, those are pretty much the options to choose from. We don't hear much of a real middle ground. Something to 'please look away' for example. And although the second season has generally been more positively received than the first, House of the Dragon is still in the running for the Most Disappointing Series of 2024 award.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Mr. & Mrs. Smith
The expectations were high. The extremely entertaining film from 2005 may have contributed to this. Add to that the fact that you get a very versatile actor like Donald Glover and there is potentially a very nice series on the table. However, this Prime series has never really been able to live up to expectations, although there will be a second season. With your vote, are you giving the American streaming service an extra reason to think carefully about this?

Swanenburg

Swanenburg
How far will you go for your family, if that same family betrays you? That was the premise of Swanenburg's first season. Such a typical series of which you could already doubt in advance whether a follow-up season was really necessary. If we look at the reception of this second season, those doubts were justified. At the beginning of this year, Swanenburg did not perform well, which even led to a nomination in this category, as the third Dutch production.

The Regime

The Regime
HBO MAX released The Regime this year, starring a second female acting icon. This time no Nicole Kidman, but Kate Winslet. And the well-known Matthias Schoenaerts in our region also plays a role in this political dramedy. Are those the highlights? Actually, yes, because after a good start, the rest of this series has received a lot less reception so far.

The Umbrella Academy

The Umbrella Academy
Final seasons are always difficult. There are countless examples of series that fell far short of satisfying the fans' high expectations in their final season. In fact, we can count on fewer hands the number of series that do - for the most part - or manage to do this. Unfortunately for The Umbrella Academy, what seems to apply to so many other series applies to them. That last season - well...

Vikings: Valhalla

Vikings: Valhalla
The second Netflix series and also the second series that offered a final season to its viewers. Netflix's Vikings also had difficulty providing viewers with a well-rated slot. And that is also a reason for them to be nominated in this category. Whether it is the top contender remains to be seen. Experience shows that series that were well rated in previous seasons often still have some kind of buffer credit. We will see which position our Vikings conquer.

Ten nominees who have a chance to win the least fun award in this election. And yet: in many cases we have talked about these series, we have looked forward to them and sometimes secretly enjoyed them. It is not without reason that some of the nominees are series that have been running for years, or series that have been extended for another season. So how disappointing are they really? We'd love to hear from you!

These were all ten nominees nominated by you, the readers, the writers and myself. If you want to choose a different series, use your wildcard. Good luck voting!

I think you have to have seen a series (partly) to be able to vote for it. And that only applies to one of these series and that is The Regime. I was really looking forward to this series with Kate Winslet, especially after the fantastic Mare of Easttown, but I was disappointed. The first episode was quite good, but that went downhill very quickly and after episode 3 I even stopped watching.

I haven't even started the other series or I had already stopped watching them in an earlier season. The only one I'm still hesitating about watching is De Ring.

I've seen The Acolyte, The Ring, House of the Dragon, The Regime, and The Umbrella Company from this list.

I enjoyed House of the Dragon and The Regime quite a bit, so for me it goes between the other three. And then The Acolyte (in a negative way) stands out for me.

I found House of the Dragon and The Acolyte entertaining this year, but in both cases I thought there could have been more. I think it's a shame that The Acolyte won't get a second season.

House of the Dragons, The Umbrella Academy and Vikings: Valhalla were all fine and IMO don't belong on this list.

A The Regime and Berlin were by far the most disappointing for me. My vote goes to Berlin though.

Puzzle why Mr. & Mrs. Smith is in here. Something about wrong expectations if you went to see this and thought you would get something in the style of the movie of the same name? This series is generally quite well appreciated and is just really well put together.

House of the Dragon s2 is actually a lot better than s1, so in my opinion it is certainly not disappointing.

The Acolyte has a cool title, but was otherwise really disappointing

My wildcard went to Percy Jackson. In that series the makers managed to take all the fun out of the story. A total disappointment for me.
