Series of the Year 2024 - Best mini/anthology series

Series of the Year 2024 - Best mini/anthology series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2024 and focuses on the best mini-anthology series of this year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 6, and Sunday February 10.
It's already the end of 2024, which means we can look back at the (crazy series) that were released last year. Just like in previous years, the range of mini/anthology series was very diverse, but also very strong. That always makes it difficult to come up with a list of ten nominees. Among the nominees are series that have been running for several years or are clearly released for a single season, series with a historical setting and there are several series based on a book or true stories. It also appears that the themes of World War II and crime always go down well.

The series that have been nominated in this category have been determined based on a number of different factors: my fellow reviewers, the results of the poll and of course the most important factor; the readers of MijnSerie! All in all, that has resulted in the list of ten nominees.

Below in alphabetical order are the top ten nominees of the best series from 2024 in the category best mini/anthology series;

Agatha All Along

Agatha All Along
This was a series that I never thought would be released. Agatha All Along is a spin-off of the Marvel series WandaVision in which the titular character Agatha played the villain. In Agatha All Along, it is about Agatha Harkness as the main character and the roles are reversed. Now Agatha finds herself in a situation where she is trapped under a spell from Wanda Maximoff. In addition, she has lost her powers that she is trying to get back. Agatha All Along is different from the other Marvel series. It contains more humor and singing. But this series is also very well made, has a good cast and is always entertaining to watch. This series has also been nominated for best series in a number of other categories.

Baby Reindeer

Baby Reindeer
Baby Reindeer tells the true story of Donny Dunn who wants to break through as a comedian and has to deal with a stalker. The special thing about this series is that the lead actor Richard Gadd is also the person on whom the story/series is based. So he plays himself, which is very clever. It is quite intense how the stalking has affected his life. Insane acting performances and you are completely involved. Sometimes you also get a nasty feeling while watching the series. Baby Reindeer has been very well received critically (winner of no less than six Emmys) and in my opinion a very deservedly nominated series in the drama category. This series has also been nominated for the best series in the drama category.

Fargo

Fargo
The first season of Fargo was released in 2014 and was based on the story of the 1996 film of the same name. Several seasons have since been released and the fifth season was released last year. Fargo is known for its dark storylines, but also with a touch of (also) dark humor. In addition, the cast is always very strong. This is certainly also the case in the fifth season. For example, the main actors have both received a Golden Globe and an Emmy nomination for their role in Fargo. In total, the fifth season has received three Golden Globe and fifteen Emmy nominations. Critics also consistently state that this season is the best since the first two seasons, while all seasons have generally been well received. Fargo is a very strong series of high quality. Another well-deserved nomination!

Masters of the Air

Masters of the Air
It had been a given for many years that there would be a series about Masters of the Air. After many delays, the unofficial sequel to Band of Brother and The Pacific was finally available. And in my opinion it was worth the wait, because it was an insane, intense series and a pure spectacle to watch. In Band of Brothers and The Pacific the ground troops were central, but this time, as the title of the series suggests, the pilots. The series conveys well how many risks the missions in the air entailed. The percentage of casualties is a lot higher than with the ground troops. And the reasons for this are clearly shown. For me it was a series that you are completely absorbed in and that you watch in one go (just like the unofficial predecessors). Just like the other nominees in this list, very deserved!

Monsters: the Lyle and Erik Menendez story

Monsters
The first dark season was about Dahmer, one of the most notorious serial killers in American history. Now it was about the Menendez brothers who shot their parents. Even though the story is dark, the second season was a bit lighter for my taste, which was partly due to the music of Milli Vanilli. The cast is very strong and there are big names connected to it such as Javier Bardem. But the two brothers are also very convincing. One episode in particular was very impressive. It consisted of a long shot while you were completely in it. The reason why the Menendez brothers shot their parents was never completely clear and that is well reflected in the series. Even until the last scene you do not know why they did it. Another well-deserved nomination and I am curious what a subsequent season will be about.

Mr Bates vs the Post Office

Mr Bates vs The Post Office
I have not seen Mr Bates vs the Post Office myself, but this series also appears to be unanimously popular among fellow reviewers and MySeries users. In addition, the series is also well received by critics. Mr Bates vs The Post Office is about the true story in which Alan Bates and other branch managers of post offices in England were wrongly accused of fraud and theft by the British post. It turns out to be one of the biggest scandals in recent British history. The series has caused such a stir that the British government even announced that it would pass a law that would allow victims to be compensated more quickly. In this context, an honorable mention for De Toeslagenaffaire, a series from the Netherlands with a similar theme, which just missed out on the list of nominees. Mr Bates vs The Post Office has also been nominated for best series in the drama category.

Ripley

Ripley
Ripley is based on the book The Talented Mr. Ripley which was last filmed in 1999 with Matt Damon in the lead role. Ripley is about a con man who is hired to convince someone to return home to Italy. However, everything becomes more complicated after meeting Ripley. From the moment Ripley appeared on Netflix, it was an instant success. The viewing figures were very good but the series was also very positively received by the critics. This became even more evident at the Emmys as Ripley received thirteen nominations of which she subsequently won four. Once again a series with strong acting performances and a deserved nominee in this category. This series is also nominated for best series in the drama category.

The Penguin

The Penguin
The series is a spin-off of the film The Batman in which, you guessed it, the Penguin plays a central role. I haven't seen the series myself, but it is high on my watchlist and has often been recommended by others. No surprise given its popularity that it is on the list of nominees. The Penguin takes place after The Batman in which Oz Cobb wants to seize power in the criminal underworld of Gotham. The lead role is played by Colin Farrell, who also receives a lot of praise for the role. The Penguin has also been nominated for several Golden Globes, which is very positive for DC Comics, who have released few productions in recent years (except for The Batman) that were well received.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz

The Tattooist of Auschwitz
The second series in this list of nominees with the theme of World War II and again a film adaptation of a book with the same title. The series is about, as the title suggests, the Jewish prisoner who had the role of tattooing the identification numbers on the prisoners in Auschwitz. Very moving story and just like with The Jewish Council unthinkable that these events took place. The events of the series have also occurred for the (probably) most part in reality as the basis lies in the memories of a real Holocaust survivor. The series has generally been well received and has received two Emmy nominations. This series has also been nominated for the best series in the category mini/anthology series and best series 2024.

True Detective: Night Country

True Detective
A crime mystery in a remote northern part of America with Jodie Foster in the lead role was apparently a recipe for success. I personally thought it was the best season after season one. The series continues to captivate you and was full of suspense. I personally thought that not everything was explained completely clearly and a number of things were left in the middle. But those are minor points in an otherwise very strong season. This season was also very well received by the critics and it won many Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. Hopefully they will be able to continue this success in a possible next season.

As you have seen, it is a very diverse list of nominees. Of course, there are many series that could have been included in this list of nominees. In my opinion, the current list is a good reflection of the preferences of my fellow reviewers, the results of the poll and of course the most important factor; the readers of MySeries!

Each and every one of them is a good series and I am very curious to see what your vote will be for!

These were all ten nominees that were nominated by you, the readers, the writers and myself. If you still want to choose a different series, use your wildcard. Good luck with voting.

This category is indeed a tricky one. Mr Bates vs the Post Office, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Fargo, Ripley or The penguin.

I still have to watch Masters of the Air. That is really a very beautiful series to watch but you miss the rawness that Band of Brothers or The Pacific had. It is too beautifully presented for such a dark story.

My voice very monotonous this year.. again The Penguin :P

For me this one is going to be easy: Fargo.
This season went back to the roots. Minnesota and snow :-)
There are again wonderful characters in which Jon Hamm and Juno Temple are a good match for each other. At times also wonderfully absurd. Fargo as Fargo is meant to be.

I haven't seen the other series, except for The Penguin, but that didn't make a big impression on me.

No Say Nothing unfortunately, I think that one is overlooked by many people. True detective season 4 was really particularly mediocre.

Ripley, Tattooist of Auschwitz and Masters of the air.
Phew, difficult, but I still become a Tattooist
