Series of the Year 2024 - Best Ended series

Series of the Year 2024 - Best Ended series

This column supports the Series of the Year election 2024 and focuses on the best ended series of this year. You can vote for your favorite series in this genre and others, between Monday, January 6, and Sunday February 10.
It's another year full of farewells. Farewell to series that we as viewers have enjoyed immensely. This year we have again put together a mix of different genres, from different countries, and also of different lengths. Series for whom it was ready after two seasons, but also series that we have been able to enjoy for seven seasons.

We have series that have a beautiful, fitting ending. We have open-ended series from which you would expect an extra season. We have a spin-off from a series that was in this category a few years ago. And we have a spin-off whose parent series is still running! In short, the offer is enormous again. I say, vote!

Arcane

Arcane
It was clear from the start that Arcane would not last long and that it would end after season two. Still, this animated series has left an indelible impression on fans. Arcane is set in the same universe as the League of Legends game and is an excellent addition to the well-known computer game.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Arcane.

Elite

Elite
Spanish series have been doing well on Netflix for years, and Elite is proof of that. An exclusive boarding school forms the setting of this series. Murder, intrigue, betrayal and the gap between rich and poor formed an irresistible mix over eight seasons. Last summer the fun was over and the doors of Las Encidas closed permanently.

Evil

Evil
Dutch talent is also doing well outside our national borders. Katja Herbers was able to star in Evil for four seasons. This series combined human drama with supernatural elements and explored themes such as good and evil. Evil is exciting, engaging, well-acted and has delivered four seasons of quality television. That's why this series deserves a spot on the list.

La Brea

La Brea
Sinkholes are a fascinating phenomenon. How does something like this come about? And what is in such a hole? La Brea comes up with a very unlikely answer and thus presents an absurd mystery in a fascinating world. La Brea took many unexpected turns and was playful with the laws of nature. The whole thing ended nicely with a short third season.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about La Brea.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer
First there was the comic, then the movie and then the series. Just like the train, the Snowpiercer series went very quickly. It presented a fascinating world and a colorful cast. Unfortunately for fans, there was a lot of wrangling surrounding the programming and the series was initially going to be canceled after three seasons. Fortunately, AMC took over to give Snowpiercer a worthy ending.

Station 19

Station 19
Grey's Anatomy has been running for so long that it has now had two spin-offs of six and seven seasons. Like Grey's Anatomy, Station 19 has the same elements that make it so much fun. A large cast, relationships between colleagues and life-threatening situations made Station 19 as fun to watch as Grey's Anatomy.

The Crown

The Crown
In 2016, Netflix started a prestige project: filming the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II from beginning to (almost) end. For six seasons we could enjoy fantastic sets, top actors and a lot of scheming behind the scenes of the British royal family. The last episodes were shown in December last year, completing a beautiful piece of television.
Here you can read the reviews that were written about The Crown.

The Good Doctor

The Good Doctor
Hospital series come in all shapes and sizes and they are (almost) all worth watching. The Good Doctor benefited from a talented cast, led by Freddie Highmore, who played the autistic Dr. very well. Shaun Murphy. The Good Doctor presented viewers and main characters with enough interesting storylines for seven seasons and ended on a beautiful note.

Vikings: Valhalla

Vikings: Valhalla
A few years ago, Vikings scored well in this category. Now it's the turn of the spin-off Vikings: Valhalla, which ended after three seasons. Like Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla is brutal and grand. Unfortunately, this series ended very openly and many storylines did not have a proper conclusion. Maybe time for a fresh start?
Here you can read the reviews that were written about Vikings: Valhalla.

Young Royals

Young Royals
Not only Spanish series are doing well on Netflix; Scandinavian series also score high. An example of this is Young Royals, in which we follow the fortunes of the students of a Swedish boarding school for the nobility. Young Royals is touching and succeeds in interweaving LGBTI themes with beautiful storylines. Even though we only got eighteen episodes, it was eighteen really good episodes.

These were all ten nominees nominated by you, the readers, by the writers and myself. If you want to choose a different series, use your wildcard. Good luck voting!

I had nominated The Penguin but it looks like there will be a 2nd season.

That will be a tough choice between Arcane and Vikings: Valhalla...

Despite enjoying 6 seasons of The Crown and no clarity yet on a sequel to The Penguin, Arcane gets my vote in this category.

This one is also very easy for me: Evil!
Great horror series with a fantastic Katja Herbers and Michael Emerson. I looked forward to this every year. Too bad it's over, but it was neatly concluded.

I didn't see all 10 of them 😁
I was thinking about Yellowstone, or is that not over yet?

There were still episodes of Yellowstone after November 30th. This series will undoubtedly compete for the best ending series of the year next year.

That's right! Yellowstone had its last episode on December 15th. Same goes for What We Do in the Shadows, which ended on December 16th. Definitely nominate it next year if you see it on the list!
